There'll be a sash, swimsuits and a title, but this is no ordinary beauty pageant.

On Sept. 18 to 21, the search for Mr. Gay Canada is on.

Organizers say they're looking for brains, not brawn, in the inaugural nationwide competition to be held at Celebrities nightclub in Vancouver and various venues in Whistler.

We're looking for somebody who has presence and confidence and can represent our country on an international level," said organizer Terry Costa.

Mr. Gay Canada should also be articulate, smart, and be able to speak on behalf of the community "about equal rights, an inclusive society and a better world," he added.

The 10 delegates, including five from B.C., will be judged on appearance (15 per cent) and on character and leadership (85 per cent).

The competition includes an eco-challenge, photo shoots, bar-hopping, interviews and community appearances.

There'll be Speedos for a photo shoot in Lost Lake in Whistler.

The winner, who will be chosen on Sept. 20 at Maxx Fish in Whistler, will represent Canada at the International Mr. Gay competition in California this winter.

Despite the pageant accoutrements, Costa said the event isn't a beauty contest but more "a community event looking for the best ambassador."

Vancouver contestant Aaron Ursacki thinks he's got what it takes.

"I feel very good about it," said the 29-year-old Ursacki, who won Vancouver's Next Top Gay Model competition earlier this March.

"To get the chance to be an ambassador for the gay community in Canada would be phenomenal."

To prepare for the competition, he's been brushing up on current events in between his 70-hour work week as a wholesale manager for Flight Centre.

"It's really important. It's more leadership and issue-driven than looks-driven."
