Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and now Billy Mays!

I must say I was shocked more by learning about the loss of Billy Mays then when my waitress came by my table to inform me mid burger of MJ's passing.

In his death I also learned this.

In February 2009, Mays publicly challenged Offer "Vince" Shlomi, also known as "Vince Offer" to a "pitch-off" between their respective products, the Zorbeez and the Shamwow. Popular Mechanics compared the absorbancy of two towel products and declared Shamwow the clear winner.

They say Mays died from a bump in the head but I think he was never the same after being Shamewow'd.

Longevity of appeal/relevance is a key factor. Ed McMahon was sort of "before my time" as well but I was more aware of him as a celebrity than Fawcett. Farrah's celeb status can be ultimately summed up as "Charlie's Angel + poster".. Ed is "Johnny's right-hand man, Star Search and giant novelty cheques" I think Ed earns the extra +, while neither of them is ubiquitous enough to pop culture to earn A list status.

All comparing that's going on with Farrah and MJ is getting really annoying. I saw on IMDB they were comparing the ratings for MJ TV specials versus Farrah specials on TV. How dumb is that. OoooH they died on the same day, let's start comparing their careers and deciding who deserves to be missed more or whatever.

And honestly they're not even really comparable. Comparing MJ to Farrah Fawcett is like comparing Elvis to...well, Farrah Fawcett. It's not happening. So if you cared about her, go ahead and mourn her....but who cares who else died that day?
