I'd prefer a lower key Olympics with free speech than trying to squeeze every last drop of money out of sponsors by bending over backwards to serve them.

For work I had to read the guide to talking about the olympics. It's pretty nuts, it's basically a guide to how they are going to sue you.

For example if a local business puts up a sign saying, "Go Vancouver 2010" or something similar they will get sued. And as a fun little thing too, they don't have anyone to check with before you do something, only people to enforce the rules if you do it wrong.

From everything I've seen on my end, it's not evil. Just really poorly organized.

Let's get this straight: I fully support sporting competition.

What I do NOT support is massive public expenditures that only benefits a small portion of said public. ESPECIALLY when so many other facets of society are denied equal/partial funding (ie: education, health, housing, etc...)

I do NOT support excessive restrictions on public movement, access, or expression.

So, don't expect me to pony-up and cheer on something that I find flawed and exclusive.

By all means, go ahead and wave your banner, stand in that queue, and spend your money.

I'll drink a toast to the Gong Show from someplace warm, far away.

I caved.

The burgeoning Olympic spirit is infectious. I bought a light-weight Vancouver2010 Olympic zip-up to wear on the plane. Going to buy some warmer stuff when it get back at the end of December. The Bay has some pretty cute stuff, actually.

Friends and I are also hoping to get hockey and speed skating tickets when they go on sale this Saturday.
