Well maybe because Jim is just a likeable son of a bitch that people are willing to cut him a bit of slack and you haven't gotten to that level yet.

it was definately a stupid mistake, and i thank god every day no one else was hurt, because i definately couldn't live with myself.
people make mistakes, i wasn't so blind drunk i just smashed into a pole, it was a few months ago the night it snowed. i fucked up, i admit it, i posted the pics and story to possibly open a few peoples eyes that it can happen to any one. you shouldn't think you are invincible, i know i did, and this was the biggest wake up call in my life. although it was a bad thing to happen, i am being positive about it, i am trying to look at this like a second chance and live life to the fullest now and ill definately never make that mistake again, nor will i let any one of my friends do it, which i know they did before. to people who want to say bad things to me, well im sorry, but you dont know me, and im sure if some one in your family made a mistake, you would forgive them. i think the last 2months of hell is punishment enough, and it'll be several more months of the same thing, its a lesson well learnt. like i said, lets all be glad no one else was hurt, i take responsibility for my mistake, i deserve it. thats why i post this, maybe people will think twice, and not think this shit just happens to other people.

No sebcoe, theres more the one kind of punishment. Your 2 months of hell was your own personnal punishment. Now it should be followed by at least 2 months of being called a fucking stupid twat.

You have to understand the difference here. What Jim did was stupid. There is no excuse for driving drunk. But that doesn't make HIM a stupid twat, it makes his decision stupid.
What DOES make YOU a stupid twat is the fact that you conciously get into your car with intentions to street race, putting aside what COULD happen just for that short adrenaline rush. And its not a one time thing. You do this as a hobby. Jim doesn't get into his car and drive home drunk as a hobby.

there's a difference between thinking you're invincible, and having your own mortality ass rape you.
jim is of the latter. nothing that can be said will change anything, as he's probably well aware of his mistake. for the former, as it would involve an event in the future, it could be prevented. hence, why jim gets the "tsk tsk" and others get chastised for their naievity. that being said... jesus christ jim. how fast were you driving?

I dont feel like reading through again, but didn't he say he wasn't that drunk and it was in the snow? This clearly wasn't a one time stupid thing for an otherwise safe driver...
You guys can say im stupid for racing all you want, but i don't for a second believe that jim was driving home one night and thought to himself, "Say, lets see how fast i can go in the snow!". He's obviously traveled in a speed greater then the weather conditions permitted before.
