July 12 - Drum Circle at Cates Park - This is the first of a series of drum circles on Saturday evenings during the summer, weather permitting, in beautiful Cates Park, starting around 7PM. From 4 - 7 there will be a performance by a local band, followed immediately by a drum circle, so bring your picnic. Cost: $5, drums available for rent for $5.

To get to Cates Park from Vancouver, go north on 2nd Narrows Bridge, take the first exit (Dollarton Hwy), continue along Dollarton through the Maplewood Flats area, through the Indian Reserve, and then another mile or so. The park is on the water on your right. The drum circle will be located on the grass area close to the lighthouse.

July 15/16 - Djembe Drumming Classes with Russell Shumsky - Master drummer Russell Shumsky is starting new sessions of drumming classes on July 15 and 16. Classes are located at Britannia and Strathcona Community Centres. Drums are provided. For more information see www.russellshumsky.com or call 604-253-2114.

July 16 - Drum Circle, Jam & Dance Party at Hot Jazz Club - An ongoing drum circle, dance party & jam session at the Hot Jazz Cabaret, 2120 Main Street (near 6th Ave). This Wednesday featuring a performance by Sambata with dance rhtyhms from Brazil & Cuba. $5 for the whole evening, refreshments available. Drum circle starts at 7:30, first person drumming gets a free drink! Some loaner drums will be available.

July 19 - Drum Circle at Cates Park - An ongoing series of drum circles on Saturday evenings during the summer, weather permitting, in beautiful Cates Park, starting around 7PM. July 25 - Drum Circle at Masabo Studio - Jam with Fana Soro & friends the last Friday of every month at Masabo Music & Dance Studio, 40 - 6th Street, New West. 604-521-4225

July 26 - Illuminares - This lantern festival at Trout Lake Park (near 15th & Victoria Drive) is the best drumming event of the summer. Picnickers converge on the park during the late afternoon, and drumming, dancing, parading, fireworks, etc. go on until past midnight.

Aug 11 - 15 - Fun with Rhythm at Summer Camp - An exciting course for those who play or would like to discover drums and percussion. Students will learn technique and rhythms in a wide variety of styles. Taught by Dave DiTomaso, who has been performing since 1980. $70. Italian Cultural Center, 3075 Slocan @ Grandview Hwy. Sept 5 - 7 - Hand Drum & Percussion Camp on Hornby Island - Come to Hornby Island and experience the rhythm of the Island, the eagles, the forest, the beaches and the drum. Drum Camp Facilitators: Ron Sitter and Dean Samuel 5 hours of workshops on each of Sept 6 and 7 Circles Drum and Didgeridoo circles on Sept 5, 6 (bring your Didge along!) Here are some regular, on-going (usually weekly) events for drummers. These events come and go so, especially for the older postings, check with the organizer before going out of your way.

Drum Circle at Spanish Banks - The perennial Spanish Banks Sunday drum circle has started for the year! Folks start to gather at 6 or 7PM Sunday evening near the anchor at Spanish Banks and stay until it is too cold or wet to continue. Bring your own drum (or rhythm toys of any description) and whatever else you need to be comfortable. - posted 2003-6-12

West African and SABAR Dance Lessons - Every Sunday at Ache Brasil, 341 East Broadway, Siley Adama teaches tradional African tribal dances from West Africa and the exceptional Sabar dance from Senegal from 6h30 to 8h. 8 weeks/90$ 4 weeks/50$ Drop in/15$ Bring your kids! Beginners Djembe Workshop - This is an on-going eight week beginner course in the Djembe. Taught by Vancouver percussionist and drum teacher Alex Mckechnie Every Saturday from 2:30 to 3:30pm at the Forufera Centre for Dance, Joy, and Well-Being, 505 Hamilton Street, Vancouver.
