'Cow came from Canada': U.S. farmers Community closes ranks: Suspicion will remain until cow's origin is determined
Jim Farrell CanWest News Service Friday, December 26, 2003 MABTON, Wash. - In southern Washington state, as beleaguered dairy farmers look for someone to blame after a mad cow turned up in one of their herds, fingers have begun to point north. ''That cow came from Canada,'' said a Mabton-area dairy farmer, who refused to give his name. ''Now it's going back to Canada.'' No one involved in the government investigation has suggested a Canadian connection, but according to residents of Mabton, local dairy farmers are sure it came from somewhere else. It was not raised in the Yakima Valley, they say. Yakima cows are too healthy. Amanda Hammon, a reporter with the local Yakima Herald newspaper, confirmed other dairy farmers are saying the same thing. U.S. agriculture officials are now trying to uncover the origins of the infected cow from Sid Wavrin's Sunny Dene Ranch on the outskirts of Mabton. Mr. Mavrin purchased the cow in 2001. If the U.S. tracking system is not as thorough as Canada's, discovering where it was born and raised could pose problems. If it cannot be demonstrated the Holstein was born in the United States, Canada will be the natural suspect.... more...
