Real Vs "Cultured" diamonds...
Which would you prefer?
I read this article from Wired, and then looked at the 2 companies that they mentioned in it here and here. The thing I like about them is that they aren't "blood diamonds". They may not be "real" in the traditional sense, but they aren't cubic zirconia or anything like that and they have the exact same properties as the real thing at a fraction of the cost. I DO prefer the Apollo diamonds to the Gemesis ones though. Coloured diamonds don't really do it for me. IMO, other gems are supposed to be coloured and diamonds are supposed to be "white". I've already told my boyfriend that when/if he buys me an engagement ring, I only have 2 requests: White gold (because I always wear silver, not gold), and Canadian diamonds. I think I could tell him that if he wanted to buy me "cultured" diamonds instead, I would be totally comfortable with that. And one other way to look at it is that the Apollo diamonds have been said to be "too perfect"; they don't have enough flaws. If I was given an Apollo diamond, that could mean that the "real thing" isn't good enough. ;) Thoughts?

I can agree with you from the political stand point for sure.... but as for giving 'requirements' to your bf about your ring??? I mean when it came down to me buying a ring I bought what I could afford...... I guess if its cheaper though it may work in his favour.
Are they hard to come by in jewellery stores? The cultured diamonds I mean.....

Let me clarify what I said: a) I mentioned to my bf what I would like in a very basic fashion. I don't care how big the damned thing is or what it looks like design-wise. The only reason I said I preferred white gold is because 99.9% of my jewellery is silver. And seriously, how many guys pay that close of attention to their gf's jewellery so that everything matches? =P b) If I can't have an ABSOLUTE 100% guarantee that they aren't "Blood" or "Conflict" diamonds, I don't want it (google the terms. It's horrific.). If they are Canadian diamonds, they come with certification that they are in fact Canadian diamonds. And seeing as Canadians aren't using the diamonds to fund wars that butcher and maim people...This is also why I like the concept of cultured diamonds. They are ethically safe for me.
I've explained all of this to my bf, and he understands my reasons and respects them. It's not that I EXPECT a ring, but if he ever decided to buy me one, I wanted to tell him how I felt especially on the diamond issue.

If a girl can't appreciate the extent a guy goes to find something that is truly 'one of a kind' to show her how much she means to him regardless of what it may be then she isn't worth it.
