Séguin will become famous soon enough
I've never really given punk a shot. Either then various covers, and some really wierd sounding punk band from where I used to live.
As for hip-hop, I used to be against it too, till I discovered that muchmusic gives a really bad representation of the genre.

I've got a bunch of Mad Cadies songs. That's more along the lines of Ska i believe. Which is alright. I'll download a few from the others while I sleep.

most of those 'mainstream' rappers didn't just pop out of nowhere, you know.... some are manufactured like regular pop stars, but a lot of them come from the streets and have spent long, hard, pennyless years working towards their success... not becuase they were guaranteed bytches & bling at the end, but because they live & breathe hip hop, and they'd still be doing it even if they hadn't found success.... outsiders like you & me are in no position to judge them.

"intelligent hip hop" is NOT a genre..... and it would be a mistake to assume that the underground stuff is superior intellectually.

took the words out of my mouth.

just because someone learned to rap while their mom took them to baseball practice in the civic doesn't make them suddenly a better or smarter rapper than a biggie smalls.

the only three groups i really bump on a regular basis are tribe, digital underground and wu.

Prissypants will become famous soon enough
EPMD, KRS-One, Gangstarr, Pharcyde, Mos Def, Tribe called quest, Brassmunk, Universal Soul, Jurrassic 5...

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Lords of the Underground...

If you want something with a good message though, check out Sweatshop Union. Very good stuff. Makes you think.

Know your roots though: Whodini, Grandmaster Flash, UTFO, Run DMC...
