When beach parties go bad...

VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)--Reports this hour of a fire at Vancouver's Wreck Beach.
Vancouver Fire Department Captain Rob Jones-Cook says it appears a bonfire got out of control and flames have now climbed the bank and have reached Marine Drive, with UBC student residences across the road.

Jones-Cook says the 2 alarm blaze has cut a 200 foot swath up the hill and that Coastal Fire Protection ground crews and three choppers are on the way to aid in putting out the fire.

Bone-dry conditions, rugged terrain and human carelessness combined to create a 4,000 square metre blaze at UBC Sunday morning.

The blaze appears to have started at the nude Wreck Beach which is located at the bottom of cliffs below the university.

Investigators still aren't sure exactly how it started and there were no lightning strikes in the area overnight.

The fire ignited at around 3:45 am and as crews arrived it was spreading fast.

Crews reported sheets of fire shooting overhead.

The flames were stopped just 15 metres away from school buildings and a large propane tank.

the ground is bone dry and there hasnt been any rain in the past couple of weeks, you dont have be a genius to figure out that starting a huge bonfire is a dumb idea. a fire is one thing, but a bonfire? come on. if they find these tards who started this fire, they should make them pay for it.

i guess this is good-bye beach parties for the rest of the summer, you KNOW they're going to be watching that place like hawks now.
