Bikini-clad dance team stirs up beach volleyball venue

This funny...

ATHENS (AP) - A team of bikini-clad dancers from the Canary Islands is entertaining fans, but offending some female players at Olympic beach volleyball.

Wearing bright orange outfits during the day and shiny silver ones at night, the sun-bronzed babes race onto the sand between points and matches, gyrating to blaring techno-pop. Fans join in, wiggling hips and clicking cameras.

At least one women's team isn't amused.

"It's kind of disrespectful to the female players," said Nicole Sanderson, an Australian. "I'm sure the male spectators love it, but I find it a little bit offensive."

Kerri Pottharst, Sanderson's partner, said mixing in some male dancers would've made it OK. "Equality, equality!" said Pottharst, a 2000 gold medallist.

The team, called Personal Plus, has travelled to many international volleyball events this summer. The FIVB, the sport's governing body, hired the team to perform during the Olympics.

It's the first time a dance team has entertained at the event. NBA-style dance teams have been regulars at the basketball competition for the past few Olympics.

Bob Clarke, a FIVB spokesman, said the Spanish team was not brought in to detract from the competition.

"The dancers aren't dancing when there's playing going on," he said. "When the matches are going on, the focus is on the athletes. The dancers are only here to enhance the environment for the spectator."

Dancer Vanessa Diaz said the team is not here to steal the spotlight.

"The athletes are the stars," she said. "We are here to support them. We are friends with many of them."

The fans seem satisfied.

Norman Brown brought his three sons to the Olympics from England. They came to the beach Tuesday after watching Britain play field hockey.

When they spotted the dancers, they quickly grabbed four front-row seats.

"We'll come again," Brown said as he videotaped them.

Yvonne Anderson, of Edinburgh, Scotland, said the team adds to the beach-party atmosphere, but she also would've liked to see some male dancers.

"It's all just a bit of fun," she said.

I think that's kind of a stupid idea. Like ok maybe it's fun, but they are upstaging girls that have worked so hard to get where they are. It's not fair, I can see why some of them are upset. It's not like they are at a basketball game where they are getting played big money, and get to play on a regular basis. This is something they have been training for for many years to play at the olympics. And then some girls run out and start shaking thier asses at the crowd, and everybody gives them there full attention. You can turn on MTV and watch music videos if you want to see that. You came to Athens to watch athletes. I think it's kind of rude to the players regardless of if they are doing it between plays or not.

Yep, that's the thing sex sells, and grabs the attention of viewers. Which is good for ratings. But when I watch the Olympics I don't want to watch people trying to be sexy. I want to see them striving to be the best at their sport. And when you put a lean, tan girl in a bikini, in front of a muscular girl. A lot of the time the attention is distracted due to sexual preference.
And the reason that these people were watching the Olympics is lost.

exactly who really cares about cheerleaders. So why should they even be there if they are upsetting the athletes.

One thing I noticed in the post was the part about that Pottharst saying they should at least have had a few men in the group. It would have made it a little more equal and probably a little less exciting.

but seriously Lauren is right you don't need Cheerleaders at the Olympics. Somewhere where players don't get paid to be there and play. They get paid in country pride.

NBA basketball games, the players make insane amounts of money, the players in the game are making money, and so it makes it ok to add some sexyness and dancers to entertain the fans.

The olympics do not need cheerleaders.

Ya.sure. get some guys dancing, bring that equality shit up to par. and make sure there's an even amount of black/white/hispanic/asian/mongol etc cuz we want to make EVERYONE happy all the time.
And make sure those hotdog guys are selling veggie dogs too, cuz there's people out there who don't eat meat.
