Too young for my job?

Well if you didnt know I work in the school board on call in elementry and highschool settings.

Elementry is ok but my big concern is how young I look in the highschools... I find my self trying to dress like a mom/collar shirts, stand up straigt, be mean once in a while with a striked tone, and how can I use make up when so many girls in highschool wear so much lol.

Also what im starting to notice especialy with the seniors... is how much we have in common. I rather talk with the kids then the teachers lol. Today they brought up questions of what I thought about bands and concerts... they asked me what i was doing for Halloween and I almost said spooky lol. What else I found hard was how they kept joking about the teacher (who I will agree was kinda mean) I didnt really knwo what to do... I mean not long ago I knew exactly what it was like to make fun of teachers?

weird... any hints how to appear much older?

i dont think there is anything wrong with relating to the kids. just draw yourself some lines that you dont want to cross.
say they bring up the teacher and how big of a dick they are, just say something like "hey hey hey now, not in front of me guys" and laugh and walk away. theyll understand.
i think being able to relate to the kids is an amazing quality, dont loose it.

distance yourself more from your students maybe
they should learn first, respect you second, and have fun third

i'm with megan (meghan? i can never remember if there's an h or not) here. i think being able to relate to the students is something you should hold on too. it's not something all teachers can do and i think it's great. (for you and the students)

Well I think its pretty cool too I can realate to them... Ive seen teachers with beastie boy posters int heir class room too... however I mean im like barly 3-4 years older then some of these kids? Ppl keep bugging me if they have started hitting on me yet lol.

Carrie: The great thing about this job is you dont really have to dress up(dress code) Especialy being a Teacher Assistant... I feel kind of funny if I look more profesional then the teacher :P I usualy dont wear my runners, jeans/slacks are good... just pick out the more sifisticated looking shirts/sweaters... collars make quite the diffrence. I dont think im ready to beign wearing suits yet lol... even though I had one grade 10 girl who was wearing a blazer? Ill never win :(

where whatever you want with in reason but whatever you do don't wear mismatch socks! and for some kids it's akward to wear shirt that are v-neck and cut off at the mid region so i just stear clear of those. everything else is fair game.

wow. sound like you take how you present yourself in the professional setting very seriously.

it ain't a competition, all the teacher's i've ever had have been so relaxed in what they wear, most of them wore jeans/running shoes/track pants/etc.

Well then I think of my dad who tells me of all the new young guys who have peircings, died hair at his work. My dad's pretty cool though and seem to really like hangin out with them.

However most the ppl I work with are old moms who have kids my age and older :P

I dont really think its abotu being so young in the field... more so becuase im trying to be on the one side with the teachers... yet look like/younger then the kids on the other side?

Hey Rhiannon, I know exactly what you're talking about. When I was on-call I had the same thing - teacher's trying to teach or test me, and students hitting on me. The small age gap is really tricky. I think it is an advantage to be able to relate better to the kids, but it's still hard sometimes to do your job if you don't feel the students are respecting your authority. I just always tried to be fair. Relating is good; humor excellent. But, there are certain things I just said "I don't wanna hear that!" to, in a joking tone, and then excused myself from the inappropriate conversation. Just ooze confidence without being condescending, and just don't let inappropriate conversation or behaviour slide too much, or the students just don't seem to respect you as much. "Do We need to find out what your teacher would think about this?" is one of my favorite lines when I'm pulling rank on a kid.
