Digital camera?

I was thinking about getting a new digital camera this week since I dont have one and have always wanted one for quite a while now.

Im going to need this camera to be durable, reliable, good on battery life, and semi-cheap with decent picture quality.

Im looking around the $250-350 range, any suggestions, pros, cons or things I should look for when purchasing one?

Make sure it has optical zoom.....if it just has digital zoom don't get it......digital zoom sucks ass......and I suggest getting an olympus....thats the one I have and it's pretty good........oh and the guy selling them will say that the memory card can only hold about 5-6 pictures but that is only if you leave it on high resolution....taking pictures on the good resolution setting will allow you to take more pictures with out having to shell out an extra $100 for a bigger memory card

want something atleast 3 megapixels.. and honestly you wont need anything more than that unless you're going to be making large prints (i think maybe even 2mp might be ok)

also look for a camera that comes with a rechargeable battery. ive got one that takes double a batteries and its a bitch because you have to keep replacing them, or buy rechargeable ones

and I will be making large prints though.
I was thinking about taking some club pics and scenary pics downtown and getting them blow up and framed (if the pics are worth it of course) and having them put on my walls in my living room.

But I was thinking on getting:

Sony Cybershot DSC-P73 4.1MP (sale price at futureshop, regular $330 on saler for $270, and it comes with a charger and whatnot, but then id have to get the Memory Stick 256mb for like $80 so it would come to approx $480 after taxes and warranty, but its 4.1mega pixel)

OR

Canon PowerShot A75 3.2MP (on for $300, but it doesnt come with the charger and the batteries like the Sony does, plus its only 3.2mega pixel, but my friend said Canon is the way to go, but then my other buddy has a Sony Cybershop and its amzing, so I dont know heh)

Any other help is appreicated. Thanks guys.

2mp for anyone is good.......... mp are only important to have alot if u are going to be tinkering witht eh photo eg blowing up like 5x the size and doing this and that to it, if u are using for taking pics and printing 2 is more than enough...... 5-7 and shit are for photographers and shit.

i have had no problems with it at all. metal body, small, 3.2mp. its perfect for simple kinda shots.
i recommend it for sure. and i agree bout the recharable batteries thing. my rents have that other canon your thinking about and they put new batteries in quite a bit when theyre using it.

I've come to conclusion after reading reviews and taking peoples opinions.

Im going to go with the Canon Powershot A75

and yeah I got the whole battery problem figured out. The one thing I liked about the Sony was it came with 2 batteries and a charger so it was perfect, but my buddy told me to grab 4AA's NiMH and a charger he said would be around $30-40 and im set.

my parents helped me pick up a canon a95 and im gettin it on wednesday..dont know anything about hte cam, but im just hoping its good...need it for school AND personal purposes too. so so psyched.. need to find out how much it costs here in canada first. anyone know anything? oh god i hope its a good cam.

Canon Powershot A95 is a few models up from mine. Excellent camera, thats the one my photography friend of mine uses. It is 5.3 MEGA PIXEL camera, check here for specifications.

I was in the same position u were trying to decide between those 2 cameras, On friday I bought the Canon PowerShot A75 because of the all features on the camera...there goin for $299 at future shop and bestbuy (basically the same company now cause bestbuy bought out futureshop). There is an ad in the sunday province from another camera store selling the A75 for $279 bring ad to either store and they should match the price...

i have a 4.1 digital elph wich ive taken all over the world travelling...love that little camera!

but between the dcsp73 and the a75 the sony beats it out IMO

the sony uses better, carl ziess lenses
sony is a 4.1 megapixle with enhanced movie mode
much better bundle for the money(software,charger,batteries)
and now the dscp comes with a free sony case wich is cool.

but in cannons favour it uses a more in depth ccd imager......but with less megapixels

i sell electronics in retail. so ive had lots of experince selling both these products......

i just think the sony is a better vaule for the money in this catagory.

Yeah thats what I thought as well, but I know a 2 people with Sony Digital Cameras and I know like half dozen people with Canon cameras, and with the results, I still like the Canon better. My brother swears by Canon and he convinced me to get it.

Also, dont you get a decent sized commission when selling Sony compared to Canon? I heard that somewhere, can you clear it up for me?

Last time I went MiniDV shopping, the salesmen were hasseling me to get the more expensive Sony camera, is that why? Ended up getting a JVC and I was extremely happy with it.
