Bill Gate's Computer Crashes During Presentation at CES 2005

Full Story @ Canada.com

Microsoft's Gates endures PC crash during keynote speech at U.S. tech show

January 6, 2005
LAS VEGAS (AP) - Despite suffering through an embarrassing computer crash that prompted jokes and guffaws, Bill Gates promised that Microsoft Corp. would help consumers stay plugged into technology, during a keynote speech Wednesday.

In his seventh annual keynote speech at the International Consumer Electronics Show, Microsoft's chairman explained that the proliferation of high-speed Internet access and the falling price of data storage are compelling people to put music, photos, movies and other aspects of their life into a digital format.
But while promoting what he calls the "digital lifestyle," Gates showed how vulnerable all consumers - even the world's richest man - are to hardware and software bugs.

During a demonstration of digital photography with a soon-to-be-released Nikon camera, a Windows Media Center PC froze and wouldn't respond to Gates' pushing of the remote control.

Later in the 90-minute presentation, a product manager demonstrated the ostensible user-friendliness of a video game expected to hit retail stores in April, Forza Motor Sport. But instead of configuring a custom-designed race car, the computer monitor displayed the dreaded "blue screen of death" and warned, "out of system memory."

Dear irony monthly...

I was going to post this in here when I saw it glad someone beat me to the punch

fricking hilarious

Maybe Gates will be embarassed enough to make a new Microsoft directive: "Come on guys, lets make this stuff stable... You are making me look like an ass!"

LOL!!....thats hilarious!

The thing is they where probably using driver/software that still haven't made it to the final version ( still had some bugs in it ). Either way it makes Microsoft look dumb.

I'd like to find a video of that presentation.

Mac isn't the only alternative. I've installed Red Hat's "Fedora Core" project on all my machines (including work machines, that makes 38 computers total).

I have to admit, Linux has come a *long* way in the ten years I've been using it. I would trust my Dad to install Fedora Core 3 now, and I would put my Mom in front of a freshly-installed machine and expect her to be able to get work done on it. My Dad isn't exactly a technician, either... that's saying a lot.

How does it run speed wise? How many things can you run before it gets bogged down... like dvd, mp3, burn cd, etc etc.

and how much ram does yours have... they are all at 1.6 or 1.8 G5 right?

agreed. It has come along way, but it has a long way to go in terms of integrating with more commonly used hardware and such. But i believe it could take over one day...

for sure...it all depends on what your using the computer for. macs have always been more concerned with the graphics end of the equation and microsoft just daily usage i guess. if macs could start to incorporate some of the programs (games...anything that doesnt run on a mac now) used everyday on a PC i have no doubt that they could take over.

To the Mac fans,,, start paying for your own Computers, and start doing real work... shorty you will figure out the though Macs are nice and all that,,, they cost 2-3 times a PC of equivalent raw PC power.

Also Mac don't crash much less then a PC.

If Mac are so wonderful why are the recording shops, and 3d rendering house are moving over to PC finally? If you are not sure go ask George Lucas.

Trust me I have 10 years on most of you kids,,, I'm not new to computer. I hate MS just as much as any of you,,, but when it comes down to it, it's all about getting the job done at the lowest cost.

Don't most recording companies, design companies, or anything related to those use Macs? I've read students at Berklee College in the US are required to have a Powerbook because using Macs in school "will prepare them for the real world." Also, there's another all girls private school wher every student is required to have an iPod.

Macs do cost more than most PC's, but there are iMacs and iBooks which are more conveniently priced than the Powermacs/books. Aren't Macs at a higher price not in spite of, but because of designers/artists using it for their work?

Was just wondering.
