I was actually "atta boy"ing him for his refusal to use the money save on anything useful or worthwhile and waste it on alcohol enhanced moments, many of which he likely doesn't remember.

did i just trade one vice for participating more heavily in another?

you should put the money in a savings account or somehting instead of wastin it on somehting else that isnt good for your health.
