Trust or Respect?

Well the main question is, What seems more important?
Not in a relationship, but in a simple friendship, aqaintanceship, authority, etc.

My personal outlook is respect, when you have respect, you show that you are educated enough with life to know were to draw the line with your thinking towards another, (wether it be a question they asked you, or simply a request to not fuck around and carrying it out.) Respect to me is giving the space needed without crossing any unnecessary lines, being mature about situations etc. I donno i had a small dilema and this really bothered me, so i want to see what majority thinks...

but in order to really become friends with someone is to be aknowledged... and if they are assholes to you from the start...that sure as hell isnt a recipie for good friendship, let alone trust. If someone respects you, then you have something incommon (if you respect them)...then the trust builds.... i shoulda rephrased the question to...what is needed to gain trust? but whatever well see how this subject builds

Excellent thread Ben.
Id have to go with Respect because usually if you respect someone you generally have a bit of trust in them as well.

I'd go with trust.
It's very hard for me to trust someone. I respect (or try to) pretty much everyone. I think respect is something that everyone deserves. Not so with trust.

I go with respect. If everyone were to respect other ppl, there would be no racism and no prejudices against other ppl -----> a multicultural world of happy people living together..... ( Marcel's Utopia..... I know it is not that easy and it will never come true.... ) But at least I try to respect other peoples opinion, even if I strongly disagree.

if you cant trust someone then there's no respect.

if you don't respect them then they may also wonder if they can trust you

People trust others far too easily.

Respect comes to those that have earned it. Seen?

Respect I give until I am proven it should be taken away.

Trust is earned and woe is s/he who breaks that.

i disagree with your opinion
yes some people trust others far too easily, but a strong majority does not.

and i believe respect should be given to everyone, it should not be earned. we SHOULD respect everyone. of course though, we cannot in our little world.

alas, TRUST, that is something that must be earned.

respect should be had for everything/everyone, and usually trust evolves from respect.
so, respect first, trust second

Here's a good way to answer this.

How many people do you trust?

How many people do you respect?

The fewer is the more important.

I disagree that you can't respect people you don't trust.

I don't think you can trust people you don't respect.

Respect because unlike trust respect is earned. Trust can be given in a blink of an eye,

I'm the opposite. It takes a lot longer for me to trust someone than to respect someone.

Blink of an eye!? That's crazy talk.

i can trust people and not respect them, like i may not like something about them so i don't respect them, but at the same time i could still know they are trustworthy. however, i could never respect someone one and not trust them.

for me : trust is the most important thing. not just over respect, over everything. trust is the key to everything.

nice to hear allot of different opinions

for me atleast... respect goes before trust, i trust everyone til they fuck it up, but the level of trust raises with the respect that i gain over time. Respect can be gained but i think its one of those harder things to aquire. But its true... trust and respect go hand in hand...
