car alarms

i just got myself a 2 door automobile and i want to throw on an alarm. nothing too fancy, just the handles alarm and a sensor.

so....

-has anyone installed their own alarm? if yes, how did that go? where'd you buy your alarm, what kind did you get, how well does it work and how much did it cost?
-should i get a professional too do it? how much should it cost around? anybody got any references?

some jerk stole the tires off one of my co workers car the other day, right beside the store on a busy street during the day. fucking east van!

car alarms suck...

i have rarely seen them work for an actual theft. more likely to set it off yourself, or one of your friends, or a passing-dog... or whatevs.

r/ i think car alarms are irritating. especially on ferries... like what you think they're gonna drive ur car off into the WATER?! what a fucking WASTE. pa-leez. someone would have to be RIDICULOUSLY moronic to ttry and steal a car off a ferry... /rant

i used to live on an island, i have this thing about hating car alarms on ferry boats.....

yea that's really my main concern, false alarms or shortcomings.

if i were too get it professionaly done, would it perform better?

this guy i know has this high end alarm installed proffesionaly, it messages you when someones poking around his jeep. he was on the road and things were kinda wobbly so he checked it out too find one of the wheels was hanging by one loose nut. someone loosened pretty much all his nuts on a wheel and the alarm didn't react.

Ask at BCAA.

My buddy got an ignition disabler for his beemer. You need to pass this magnetic card near a secret spot on the dash before the ignition will start. You get reduced insurance if you have one.

Are ignition disablers the same as immobilizers?

The only thing my car has is The Club.

I think they are the same.

I dropped off my friend at the airport using his beemer. He didn't explain to me about the disabler so there I was parked in front and couldn't start the car! Fortunately was able to call his bro on the cell and figured it out (or I woulda been screwed)

neoh will become famous soon enough
it's best to have a professional do it, because if he happens to get broken into - nothing is covered.

Also have an immobilizer for it.

They don't cost too much for parts & labor, and are well worth it.

To install a good alarm into a new automobile is quite complex. For example all '02 and newer GM's have their airbags, stereo, ignition controls and climate controls all daisy chained together which is fun to deal with. So if u mess up one they are all fucked. If you are not comfortable to install it yourself don't let a friend do it, take it to Future Shop or A/B Sound they will warranty all work and if they fuck up something they pay to fix it not u. A good alarm (e.g.Compustar) w/ a shitty install will be worthless, where as a 100$ alarm with a great install will work flawless and actually save your vehicle.

you hsould get a professional to do it
at my work (future shop) its $100
but its already included in the price
it all depends on what you want with the alarm and what kind of alarm you want
I would say go basic and get a hood pin switch for it which is an extra $30

but it also depends on the kind of car you have and what year
if you have a newer car most of them come with a factory immobilizer which in order to install an alarm on that type of vehicle you have to bypass is and that will cost extra

future shop is $119, with another $80ish for install. i'm so cheap, $200 is kinda pricey :/

my uncle used to install alarms for a&b sound..i think i'm going to ask him to give me a hand, i just hope he still knows how to do it, its been a coupel years.

I rigged up a kill switch, its really well hidden, and unless you know a little about older Toyotas, you aren't going to get my car started. Also if I park in particularialy ghetto parts of Surrey, East Van, New West, etc, I'll pop my hood, rip off the lead from the coil to the distributer and chuck it in my bag.

Heh. Alarms are too expensive. Besides, what are they going to steal? My tape deck?

Get an immobilizer, alarms are kinda useless.
It didnt take me more than 2 seconds to disconnect the alarm on my brothers 1991 celica, it was randomly set off while i was driving for some reason :S so i ripped the wiring and took the whole damn thing off......:( i feel sorry for people who get tricked into buying alarms.
