are you going to vietnam as well? i can't remember the details. i'd choose vietnam over laos, but i've heard great things about laos too. if it doesn't take too long to process the visa, decide when you're already in the region. talk to some people, check out some pictures, and see if it strikes your fancy. ;)

i'm so incredibly jealous, travel guides and having to work constantly is the only thing that's going to get me through the summer before i get to leave!

and as far as the opium is concerned, if it works out(safely)....i think the saying is "when in Rome?"

The cool thing about going to Laos is most forieners dont go there! One of my ex's went there and thought it was rad! Its such a tiny country too. Id at least try to spend a day or two there since It seems all the SEA countries seem so diffrent alot from each other.

thats a really shitty way of looking at things. Laos is a beautiful country and the people who live there are among the nicest in the world. Every place has its criminals?

I've heard Laos is beautiful.

However, it is fairly small, and if you are going to spend the time & $$ to head over that way..check out the neighboring countries if u can.

My parents just did Thailand and Cambodia..not Laos..obviously outstanding ( an hour massage costs you 2 bucks ) but they're right next to each other; so why the hell not? :)

Happy Travels !

im starting in Indo and making my way north to bangkok, then over to Cambodia. i may as well just keep going north and go to luang Prabang, then float down the Mekong River into Cambodia. Laos is the cheapest country in SE Asia( guest house for 3$ average), and apparently the most beautiful....scenery, people, etc.
i will decide when i get there, but i think i am going to. why the fuck not eh?

thanks for the opinions everyone!

and those massages are intense man. im getting one a week for sure.

i say vietnam over laos. although i'm sure laos is amazing, from what i understand the tourist infrastructure isn't that great, meaning it'll be harder to get around and everything will take longer. vietnam has fantastic sites (ha long bay!!, the mekong delta, etc) and supposedly incredible cities (ho chi minh city & hanoi), plus the infrastructure is there... without it being the backpacker farce that is thailand.

i have looked into Laos a lot the last 2 days and apparently there is now public transportation available to all regions of the country, but limited in some.

i like the fact that it is fresh, in a travel-tourism kind of way. it will take longer...slow boats, and long buses, but those are the times you get to see the country the best. plus, get to meet other people doing the same thing.

Vietnam is safer then Laos though, that is for sure. but that excites me too:P

fuck i cant wait.

No matter were ive wanted to travel, someone always trys to scare me away. Every country has its problems and dangers. Its just a matter of using your common sence and gut feeling. Obviously walking into an opium field will probly get you hunt down. If you do enough resurch and be cautiouse you shouldnt have any problems where ever you go.

Basing Laos on that article is like putting East Hastings on the front cover of Vancouver city.
