just came across this article while doing some research.

"Cambodia is becoming increasingly popular as a holiday destination for backpackers and gap-year students who are interested in the low cost of living that makes for a cheap long-term stay. But although Cambodia has been at peace for seven years, there are still hazards for visitors.


The posters started going up towards the end of last year.


Eddie Gibson has not been heard from since October

The first one I saw was on the noticeboard of the Foreign Correspondents' Club.

Despite the name, this is not really a haunt for journalists, but actually the most popular bar and restaurant on the Phnom Penh riverfront.

The photocopy was a little too dark, but there was no mistaking the message.

"Missing son - Eddie Gibson" said the text at the top.

Along the bottom, an appeal to call the British Embassy. In the middle, there was Eddie himself, beaming out in high contrast black-and-white.

I tried to imagine what Eddie was like and what might have happened to him.

He looked young, happy, well-groomed. There was not a hair out of place or so much as a hint of stubble.

Perhaps he looked a little naive as well, after all he was only 20.

A range of possibilities came to mind."

lol Mike, to get around any of those little countries you'll have to pay off people. My friend stayed in Venezuela for a month and bribed the Army and the Police all the time. It's amazing what slipping a Canadian $5 under a Ticket can do for you. "I'll let you off with a warning this time... see you at the Bar later!"

except 5 in canadian means nothing to these people! Mike why dont you cross through Thailand? its easyass and im sure theres some spots in thailand you still wanna see? do it! fuck man I cant wait to go back!

I spent about 800$ after the airline ticket for just thailand in 4 weeks. food, transport, accomadation, scuba diving, elephant trekking, and climbing. I was comfortable as fuck too.

I'm thinking about going to india w/ a stopover in the southeast probably next dec. mike and others have put all sorts of crazy ideaas in my head though like some train that passes through central asia to russia, and all this crazy other stuff.

what a handsome young boy.... I hope he turns up alright, though it doesnt seem likely. my heart goes out to his family.. how awful.. trying to string together peices of information... I hope that they get their closure.

i want to go to the 4000 islands area, otherwise i would just scoot through thailand and skip the border shenanigans. i have read a bit more today and it appears people are doing it every day, so im gonna go for it. i am already heading north through thailand to chaing rai area to hop the border there into Laos, and stopping on koh Tao for a week or so to lounge it up and dive. i loved that island.........so i think thats enough thailand. plus bangkok for a few days before i go are a must.

dude, go to India! or wait till next summer and i will come!
