Do you wear Earplugs at raves?

It sounds like a silly question, but I've been thinking about it for sometime. Sure I'll look kind of odd wearing some foam looking shit in my ears, but maybe for the long run it'll be worthwhile. I heard custom made earplugs can reduce vibration and noise but still can maintain the crisp clear audio from the speakers. Then again while your on E it sounds like you can take any beating from a huge amount of noise.

Unfortnately whenever I come home from a rave and my mind is sobered up, the ringing starts to empower me. Anyway am I the only one conscience enough about my hearing or does the majority doesn't care about what happens to them years from now?

Thanks for the input!

I was just talking about this with Royal_Phunk after Ian Carey. We're considering getting some Custom Ear Plugs to wear to Club Event and Raves. I wore a pair to Dillinja @ Atlantis last year and it was the best drunken idea ever.

I wear half ear-plugs... if you rip em in half they aren't so intense, they don't look all retarted sticking out of ur ears, and you can still hear other people when they talk to you. :)

I too like my hearing, and want to keep it for long time.

Surprising enough a few of the UK guys Union has brought, when playing at or visiting a Rave event, have worn music earplugs. "The sound isnt as crisp [as in the club]" one mentioned.

They have different types, set to take out a certain amount of decibels. My man has 2 sets, 30 and 15.. that way if its a lil too quiet u can sorta adjust.

My girlfriend got me a set of musician's earplugs for Christmas.

It's kinda cool, actually - they're custom molds of my ear canal. To get them done, you book an appointment with an audiologist - usually they'll do a full hearing test first just to see if you've already done damage to your hearing. Then they take a little cotton disc with a string attached, and use a little stick with a light on the end to push the disc right up against your eardrum - this part can be a little bit uncomfortable, but it certainly doesn't hurt in any way. When the disc is in place, they take a syringe of blue goo and fill your ear canal all the way up... then four minutes later, they pull the string, and presto, out pops a perfect mold of your ear canal. They send that mold away and in a week or two you get your earplugs.

They're somewhere around $120 CAD for fitting.

It's worth noting that when you do start to lose your hearing, it drops off all of a sudden - like, lots of old folks hear fine one week, notice a problem the next week, and two months later are almost totally deaf. By the time you notice a problem, it's already WAY too late to do anything about it.

PROTECT YOUR HEARING! It really IS all about the music...

Wow, excellent replies everyone!!!

I was expecting more people being all hardcore about their ears but you guys actually care! Where do you guys go to get your custom earplugs and are they really worth it? I mean some 20-30 dollar replacement won't do the job as well? I guess because everyone's internal ears are different in sizes and the extra buck gets you all the protection you need. What do custom earplugs look like? Do they stilll look funky like the foamy ones? And the most important question is are they comfortable enough for you to dance all night even though your ears are sweating? A lot of the earplugs I wear at work or just cheap ones hurt my ears after awhile since the generic sizes for it aren't really for my ears. Although if I were to wear some, only for a rave since I love going up close and personal with the DJ's and the speakers :D

Thanks for the input guys, for sure you made me save up for earplugs ;)

Custom ones are worth it because they last and you know you're getting the best protection. There are different styles. I've been a bit of an asshole to my hearing as I've worked at an Airport for 3 1/2 years without hearing protection. You can get cheaper ones that work well, but I personally wouldn't mind a set of my own that are easy to fit in right every time. Those Foam bastards piss me off as I'll always get one in right and the other goofed. There are plastic generic ones as well. Just go to London Drugs or an Audiologist and discuss your options. Just explain why and they'll give you the low-down.

totally important cuz most people dont realize any hearing damage has occured unless they hear crazy ringing. But normally you just hear what you hear right so everythings great! hehe anyways my teacher at ArtInstitute is gonna give me a place to go get the custom ear plugs - 20db ones i think. My ears are very valuable to me and i also plan on keeping them around for a while.

I like the creme coloured ones from shoppers, since they arn't BRIGHT ORANGE.

they do the job, and my ears didn't hurt, but damn I lost my voice screaming at my friends (who also were wearing them)

custom ones are great cause they reduce the overall decibal level without cutting out any of the frequencies like cheap foam ones do.

Apparently you can even DJ fine with them in - i've been meaning to get a pair for the longest time now...

I've started wearing them to clubs/raves and the sort because of an incident I had at a party back in 03 - I walked by the tower of speakers as a specific decible of sound came out and wrecked my eardrum. I lost about 9db in my left ear because of it.

It's a good idea.

Yeh what mofo said, i want one of the ones that attenuate the decibals but not the frequency... I already did a little damage to my left ear last summer in seattle, i was all drunk and danced right next to the huge stack for 3 sets. Ear rang for a long time, it's gotten better though.

Get hearing protection as there is possibly nothing mroe annoying that living the rest of your life with a constant 'ringing' in your ears.

I'm have a faint 'ringing' now in my ears and only notice it in complete silence.
