mobile like phone w/ a usb cord
plug it right into your comp and it works like a reg phone

You buy a certain amount of credit onto your account (say like 10 Euros, in my case) and then you can use your account from any computer hooked up to the internet like a phone, as long as you have speakers and a microphone or a headset or something hooked up to your computer.
Phoning home from an internet cafe with skype is much cheaper than from a pay phone or phone kiosk (compare .03 eurocents a minute to Canada to 20 eurocents a minute from a phone kiosk).

skype is VoIP using proprietary protocol. (not sip)
there're win32, osx, and linux clients.
skype on motorola fones soon too.
