Did you pay for your own schooling?
Title says it all, really.
This is going to be the first semester I pay for myself (how lucky it's also my first year @ SFU). Just wondering who's in the same boat as me. :) Anyone have any words of advice? Last edited by Magi; Aug 03, 05 at 12:45 AM. |

My parents never really showed any intrest into paying for any schooling... even if they were millon airs I think they would still expect me to show some work for it. Although its tough I think I worked alot harder in school and made some better disissions about post secondary. It also feels like you REALLY earned it wich im proud of in the long run.
However they have been helpful enough to offered cheep rent and a bit of food on the table to help me save up better. |

i paid for 3 semesters, and my final semester with the 90% tuition increase i wasnt going to be able to pay for school and all my supplies on my own, and due to my situation at home, received an emergency bursary from my school.
i also got a scholarship in the first year of my program for $250, but that covered like a months worth of supplies. i worked and saved and also (unfortunately) obtained a credit card for supplies. |

head up to finacail aid and apply for every bursary you can. talk to a financail counsilor, they are there to help you. there are alot of scholarships and bursarys out there, you just have to hunt for them. check out stuff in your community as well. studentawards.com can also offer alot if youre willing to spend the time filling out the questionaire. |

my schooling has been paid for in the most part by my parents, but my first two years of postsecondary was paid for by a scholarship i got. the way my parents see it is why take out a student loan if they can just loan me the money without the interest charges.

I must say i have been very lucky for my grandparents to start a savings type fund when i was born and that my parents are willing to pitch in the rest. I just need to pay for my books which is not bad at all since i can usually sell them back to the school. Kwantlen is not that expensive when compared to other schools as well.

I think I borrowed $$ from my parents for my first semester, and then received a scholarship (which covered one more semester) and paid for everything else on my own, with the exception of a RESP my parents had started for me that helped cover the cost of books for a semster or two. When my mum and I took sign language together, we each paid for ourselves. My parents believe that education is important, but they also believe in teaching the value of a dollar.
