Ya I'm on Fido, free evenings and weekends (starting at 5pm a big plus compared to telus/bell others) and then 100 anytime minutes, and then I added on voicemail, caller id, and 100 text messages ( I love texting) and I pay about $50 a month covers all my needs.. and got a pretty nice phone with my 2 year contract, check around Fido had alot of deals on right now, and I haven't had any problems with their service although it is much better now than it was

well thanks for the imput all. i believe i've decided on the Solo phone who is a branch off of Bell. it is the best plan that suits me has free text messaging, nation wide walkie-talkie coverage but i'm never gonna use that. 30 bucks a month i think should cover my needs:)

For most people the 2 technologies (GSM/CDMA) work the same. You might get better selection of phones with GSM since they are used in all Europe and total users on GSM is larger.
Fido is definitely better now than a while ago, I've had it a few months and it's improved as they've done most of the merging of the networks. Depends on where you are mostly using the phone. The CDMA networks which run on the Telus tower system are better in some boony areas. But I get a better Fido signal now than I did with Telus, since they have a Fido/Rogers tower near my place and the shopping mall - I can use Fido no problem in the mall while it is dicey with Telus. Ask your friends who are nearby how they like their cells. Or the dealers nearby. I got a basic Fido Nokia 3100 phone, no camera, but it works better than the slick Sony cam phone I originally tried. yes compaints cause they are switching over stuff... so some may expereince problems! i got myself a fido phone yesterday - motorola, seems like a good phone. i liek it. currently with telus - have LG phone. telus is a fukin rip off.. cant stand them! pay like 200-300$, and DONT even go over my minutes, which is bullshit! i'm harsh fighting with them right now. i told them i got fido phone last nite, and its by second billing, and so much cheaper, so telus offered me by second billing and same plan as fido offering me. but not 6 months unlimited text/pic messaging and calling... so confused! i'm just loosing faith in telus. i told them why the hell would u not tell me about the match plans?? now that i actually GOT a phone.. obviously they thought i was bullshitting that i'd switch to fido. now that i actually did they are harsh nice to me, and try to do everything possible to make me stay. but i'm sooo confused. not sure what to do. my friends say stay with fido because ones they have transered their services, it will be much better with rogers! help! gsm: phones are 'newer', phones have way better gizmos (cameras, mp3 players, better pda-esque phones), cheaper phones, tech moves faster, can travel anywhere internationally and your phone will probably work, better broadband access.
cdma: less dark spots in rural areas. pretty easy for me. |

Alla, if you live in an urban area then you don't really need to worry about the type of technology you subscribe to. So ask yourself if you really plan to travel with your phone (within north america or internationally), if it is important for safety while on roadtrips, etc.
Oh, something I noticed too while talking to someone who worked for a cellphone manufacturer. Cellphone companies use the same manufacturers, but the models they release, the provider generally has the manufacturer or their own in house team do testing to see how these units actually hold up before they release them on the market. Apparenty Rogers (and now fido) was the worst offender with how much they actually had a unit tested before they released it. Rogers/fido have a wide selection of really cool new phones, but I know a lot of people who have phones from Rogers that have weird, obvious bugs and glitches to them, and after a short period of time their phone craps out, at the unsubsidized (or regular) price, cellphones can be expensive when you need to keep replacing them. Never, EVER buy an audiovox either. NEVER! |
