West Jet The New Commies?

What the fuck is with the employees owning a company? Sounds like communists to me.

I enjoy the service with westjet... they are nice and friendly and what really rocks is when your on the air plane that has the small lcd screens on the back of the head rests that has an actual satellite tv signal and no recorded bullshit. There whole fleet will have that feature by the end of feburary. I remember watching the channel 11 news (global bc) while landing in montreal....

Starbucks also gave (and still does) all it's employees shares of the company.

As soon as Starbucks went Public, each and every employee of Starbucks became instant millionaires

Economically, giving your employees shares in their Company makes great sense. When your Employees have a share in their Company it gives them more incentive to have their Company succeed. As the Company makes more money, so do they. It also promotes the Employees to give input for improvements to service and also work harder. It's not Communist, it's good Business Sense.

Communism is entirely based off of common ownership...

Between everybody.

Technically you have to work for your common ownership when you work for WestJet. That is called "Capitalism" bub.

Like ebbomega said... in a Communist Society everything is owned by everyone. I have no say or shares in WestJet, not everyone in our Society has shares in WestJet unless they pay for it. In North America we work for what we own (most of the time)... Profit Sharing is becoming a more common occurance within large companies for the reasons I've mentioned.

Not necessarily - workers joining in common ownership could also be syndicallism or fit into a system of market socialism.

Hmmm. Enron anybody?

Giving management stock options can potenially lead to an agency problem disaster. Have you ever heard of artificially inflating stock prices through shady accounting of debt? Not to say it would happen in West Jet's case but you are missing something here Erik.

You are right indeed... Anything that is used for good can be used for evil with the right mind. Like all that stuff under your Sink... it can clean your Grout or with a couple minutes and Internet Access I can level a Building.

In that case I guess the question would be, who are "the smartest guys in the room?"

profit sharing is a better incentive, as it promotes self monitoring amongst employees and is better indicator of actualy performance as stock values can and do change due to circumstances which are entirely exogenous to the profitablilty of a company or the productivity of its workers.
