Who is your pick to win the world cup 2006?

And why?

I've got to enter a pool at work for the winner/top scorer and England, Argentina, Italy and Brazil are already taken (many of which would have been my choice!)

I'm thinking about maybe Czech Republic, Germany or Portugal, but I'm not sure how they're even coming into this cup..

what are your thoughts?

Oh man, all the good picks are taken. I'd say Germany, out of what's left.

I think Germany has a good shot of proceeding, because I don't think they'll have much trouble coming out on top of their group and if they do they'll probably end up playing someone like Sweden. Whereas the Czechs don't stand a great chance of beating the Italians and then will end up facing Brazil, who they are even less likely to beat. Take a look at the schedule and try to guess who is going to have to play who: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/group/index.html

Having the home field and the crowd doesn't hurt them in the least, either. I'd love to see an England/Germany final.

Yeah I'm cheering for England all the way, but the guy running the pool is from England and he's already got them on lock :p

What about Portugal? Anyone have thoughts on them?

Portugal has it rough. Whether they come out as winners or runners up of the first round, they'll have to face either Argentina or the Netherlands and I think they'll get knocked out there.

Portugal will easily win their round robin grouping.

Who's going to beat them, mexico?!?!

They'll most likely face the netherlands in the second round, which will be a good game. The netherlands have fallen off a fair bit in international play, so I could see portugal beating them in similar fashion to the england game in the last euro.

Then you'd be looking at a portugal and most likely england semi.

And we all know what happened last time they played.

:)

I wouldn't be so sure, Mexico is ranked above them in FIFA standings.

Germany are the home side, and have a fairly easy group, but they are at a low talent ebb, without as many world class players as in past years.

I think the Czechs are a decent bet. They're in a fairly tough group but I like their chances to escape it better than Italy's or the USA's.

The Czech's were my pick. I got the schedule in my hand too.

I want Japan to win though long shot but they are getting better as the years go by. Unfortunatly their grouped with brasil...

I love Nedved

Personaly 1. Ireland (heritage) 2. England (heratige) 3. Brazil (very talented team)

Otherwise I would bet on Portugal, Germany, Czech, sweeden were farily decent teams. Maybe even Korea who made a big leap last world cup.

France used to be #2 in the world that alone says something.

Also throw in they barely qualified, and if it weren't for Zidane's coming out of retirement to play for France, and a couple other people UN-RETIRING France wouldn't even be around anymore. They would have been knocked outta the qualifying.

I like France. I cheered for them in 98, and when they won the EURO CUP too. but i don't like their chance in this one. Don't use the rankings without knowing if they dropped or rose up in the standings.

Czech's rose up
