compooter problem?

Hey, I'm having trouble conecting to the net through my laptop. I have a connection and my ip address comes up when I check out the network properties. I phoned shaw and they say everything is good on their end.

The problem is when I connect to internet explorer it just comes up blank as if I didnt have a connection. I see below on the bottom of the window its trying to connect to an address of 127.1.0.0.1 or soemthing like that.

is there anyone who may be able to help me out? thnx in advance.

is your laptop connected directly to your shaw cable modem?

dumb question, but check all your connections.

second. what opperating system are you running on your laptop?

if you are running windows 2000/windows xp follow these steps.

1. right click on 'my computer' and click properties.
2. click the 'computer name' tab.
3. click the 'change' button.
4. make sure your workgroup is 'SHAW'.
5. click 'start', click 'Run'
6. type command, click enter.
7. type ipconfig /release (WITH the / )
8. type ipconfig /renew (WITH the / )
9. reboot.

let me know if that helped you out at all.

elliot is an unknown quantity at this point
sounds like the network adapter isnt set up properly?
go into device manager to confirm this (my computer properties)

if there is something with a big yellow question mark, thats probably it.
then you will want to go to the manufacturer's website (on another comp) get the drivers for your machine, bring them over on a disc and update drivers.

you know, that would be funny if a) it wasn't the oldest joke in online tech help history and b) you got the command right.

first of all, have you tried pinging anything? it could be something gone wrong with the ie settings and have nothing to do with your hardware whatsoever. do some troubleshooting around to figure out what's going wrong before you run off to your manufacturer to get something replaced that may not need it.

start->run->cmd
run the following command:
ping www.google.com

see if it gives you responses. if it fails (meaning you either get 'request timed out' or it tells you that it can't even find the server) try pinging by ip address using this command:

ping 72.14.203.99

if the ip address works but not the url, you might have a problem with your DNS. try this command:
ipconfig /flushdns

if it's still not pinging or neither of them is pinging, give your ISP a call, there's something wrong with your connection. they're usually more skilled at narrowing down what the issue is. at that point they may determine it's a hardware issue in which case you'd go talk to your manufacturer. but only once you've verified that that's what the problem is.

if pinging works okay for URLs and ip addresses, then you've probably got a problem with your IE settings. the address 127.0.0.1 is a localhost address and just points back to your computer. if it's trying to access that it might be that your IE is trying to use your computer as a proxy. go to tools -> internet options in ie, and go to the connections tab. click on the button that says "LAN Settings". The only box checked there should be "Automatically Detect Settings", uncheck anything else and click OK.

if you're running windows xp with service pack 2 you can try this command as well:
start->run->iexplore.exe /rereg

good luck.

um.

Okay, go get all your windows updates now and start scanning for spyware.

System restore is the flimsiest windows tool on the face of the earth. Now repeat after me: "I will never use system restore again." Good. say it again. Got it yet?

System restore... what a great concept... let's put your computer back to its settings BEFORE you actually NOTICED the spyware on your computer. Doesn't actually remove anything but makes it so you can pretend everything's working fine.
