Question about Loungex
Ok I have a question as to why Al needs to charge people to keep the site running. I look around to the other message board im on and the other ops have never asked for anything more then donations, and there sites offer a way more then LX. An example of this is www.tranceaddict.com. at TA the board has 8,263 registerd members from all over the world, and to date it has 395,288 posts, and thats only since the last upgrade or somthing. On top of that they have Tons of mp3's and massive videos for download......all this for free. I also dont see anyone from form & Kaos or ED charging people. So why is Al the only one making a big deal out of this? I have nothing against Al, im just curious. I think all he needs to do is put some REAL banners on his site....not just for ghetto ass partys.

Ok you idiots,
it's not just to help pay for the $400 a month server bill. it's to keep all the idiots away. no trolls (no fake accounts) posting useless shit and ruining the forum. see the point is, if you're not willing to support LX with a $10 a YEAR fee, then we don't want you there. plain and simple. don't bitch, just don't join. |

oddmud your a geek, don't call members idiots its not nice, but its a double standard so I can call you whatever I like. ANYWAYS, you really need to stop crying about this stupid LX server bill stuff! I have heard it like a KAZILLION times already. F&K is run off $0.00 it always has been and probably will be for along time (well server cost that is) Oh, and I know what your going to say "but f&k doesnt have 1/4 the trafic loungex does" Your right! But when we do (yes it's bound to happen) The server we are on currently will still be blazing away like it is now. (thanks to my good friends at inihosting.com) So why don't you leave Al to stick up for Al, and be on your merry way.
-Myles bte, yeah www.tranceaddict.com is HELLA dope! Now THATS a forum! Special-K you earned you title rights back! :D: |

I never really though trolls were that big of a problem, what the problem was was that you fucking morons couldnt just leave a troll alone, instead of juts ignoring it you would give it lectures about how not cool trolling is.......all that does is feed it. Or how bout this easy solution. Al makes a bunch of moderators and you ban the troll accounts, thats what every other board on the fucking net does. Again tranceaddict has over 8000 members world wide and we have never had a problem with trolls.
Oh and Oddmudd go fuck yourself, this wasnt an attack on Al like i clearly stated in my post. Just because you you belong to some fucked up inner circle of LX and you know whats going on dosnt mean everyone else does. |

Website servers
Originally from Enji.org/enji (www.enji.org/enji)
You just have to love free bannerless websites. I used to take it for granted because there were big providers doing it. Xoom did it for a while. Geocities and Yahoo were bannerless for a while. All of that went the way of the Do-do one day when the tech stocks took a hit and revenues fell like shotputs. Now if you want to have bannerless webspace you basically have three options: - Pay for it (not likely) - Put your own server up with a broadband connection (marvelous option) - Know someone who can do the previous and is willing to hook you up with some sugar These days it seems web hosting is getting more and more complex. Along with that rising complexity is a rising price tag. Doing it on your own these days is seriously tough because of the massive computer fraud taking place (Code Red, Nimda, DSL modems are easy to crack). Now if you want to run a server at home and offer free space, you have to be either an expert in security or absolutely fearless when it comes to backups and restoration of systems. Admittedly though, it's 50 times better to host your own server or have a friend do it for you because the possibilities are a lot less hard to come by. When you pay for hosting, the server says: "You may use these options and scripting languages. You may only have 1 email. Blah, blah". When you do it yourself you shed a lot of those shortcomings. Management becomes decentralized and a lot easier to cope with. I have been watching Derek Powazek (www.powazek.com) push forward his book about Digital Communities and such. I think I'm going to go endorse his savvy by purchasing his book (unless someone wants to purchase it for me...no? bummer). I think the future of the web is rapidly moving towards this kind of internet presence where families or cliques of friends congregate around a single high speed broadband internet connection administered by one knowledgable individual but managed by the group. These communities are growing, and I just hope the corporate community has the graciousness to make room for them. It would be a shame to have this kind of creativity stifled just because Microsloth can't put a patent on it. ---- He also goes on to say: As time draws on, our work grows more and more complex, and the cost of outputting that work mounts higher and higher. If you take into account the machinery, hosting services, mail, page support, design support, and code development, my server is valued at much more than the sum of its parts. Roughly the machine has cost me somewhere around $1500 (and will likely skyrocket here in the near future), but the overall value of the machine based on work and copyright-based material is very probably in the thousands. To design and build a website like the one I'm posting on now would cost any client of mine somewhere in the neighborhood of $3000 or more. While I've gotten some really good response on this page, (I've never gotten negative response on this page, but I'm sure the nay-sayers are out there) there is a lot to this page that the mere mortal reader does not see. The database, the administration interface, and the custom code involved in the pages themselves. I've built several of these pages, and each has a price tag of over $1000. Generally speaking, HOSTING a forum that NEEDS to be able to take in thousands of people (150 people on at any given time) is one thing, and designing it is another. The hardware needed for this type of thing is not only expensive, but it's rather hard to come by the cash if you don't have anything supporting your site, other than a shitload of hits. Forums are a prime example of a site that needs a good server that has the bandwitdh to take all of the traffic without crashing, slowing down, or whatever. Maybe loungex should look into upgrading their server. Sorry for the long post. |

calm down. nobody was insulting al, or loungex, or bitching. it was a simple question, not all of us know everything there is to know about these things. i think al has done a great job with lx, and he seems like a super nice person form the couple times i've met him. no need for name calling:) |

snyx...you annoy me. You've certainly implied alot harsher things than "idiots" about all F&Kers in your little rants about how the board was soooooo much better when it was just you and your little group of other 15 yr olds...
Anyways... yah, I have no problem whatsoever paying 10 bux or so for use of loungex. I spend probably 10 times that much on records every week... :) 10$ over a year is really irrelevant. I'd rather it be free with trolls and all... but someone has gotta pay the bills.... why should al... we're the ones that use it. Meh...most of this has already been said at one time or another... ;) |
