question: for anyone who lives in a house

i've never lived in a house before, up until 6 months ago. and i've had an ongoing problem with HOT WATER. and today it's gone too far... i haven't had hot water for 3 days.

i'm assuming that the other 4000 people living in this house are using it all. is that how it works? i know there's a hot water tank and stuff, so like... when that runs out do i have to wait for it to refill? cuz i mean, 3 days without hot water is a little strange ... and it's pissing me off cuz i can't eat until i can wash my fucking dishes ... i've had to have like 20 cold showers in the past 6 months, and i'm pretty sure that's damaging my sexual organs ...

i've lived in apartments my whole life, so i've never had this problem before... this is really frustrating ... someone help! i wanna know if i should go lay a beating on my lanlord (as if he doesn't already deserve one)

uh, how many people are living in your house? ask them if they get hot water, if they don't then call your landlord and bitch at him, ask him if the hot water tank is broken. you shouldn't be going that long without hot water.
in the meantime you can always boil some water to wash the dishes in. i know it's a pain in the ass but it's better than nothing.

Once all of the hot water is used the tank refills and the heating element turns on to warm it up.

If you have had no hot water for 3 days then most likely the pilot light (flame) for the hot water tank went out if it is gas powered, or check the breaker if it is electically heated.

Most times a seperate hot water tank is installed for a tenant suite so the people in the main part of the house don't use all of the hot water and the tenant gets cold water and vice-versa.

here's my situation winston:
i'm in SURREY in a neighbourhood where every house is east indians with white ppl in the basements ... i don't think i have a seperate hot water tank (because my hydro is included in my cheap rent, and one of my neighbour's keeps telling me the landlords around here do everything as cheap as possible) , and if i do, i'm probably sharing it with at least one of the 2 other basement suites. i haven't been ENTIRELY without hot water for the past 3 days, i get about 30 seconds of hot water every couple hours when i check, then it's gone. so i know the tank isn't broken ...

i'd say on average there's about 15 people in this house. my landlord's family upstairs (6), his brother's family downstairs to the left of my suite (4+/-), and his cousin's family behind me (UNKNOWN)... and i swear i hear a shower or a tap of some sort running for at least 20 minutes out of every hour, and i mean EVERY hour ...


and jade, funny u say that i should boil water to wash the dishes, cuz i just did that ... haha... i've had to do it a few times before too ...


oh well, i'll only be here for 2 or 3 more months at the most...

that's not normal for you not to get hot water for 3 days..

i'd ask the landlord about that to see if the others in the house are getting hot water as well? cause if they are, then it's them using it all up..

with my hot water tank, if you used all the hot water then you have to wait about 30 minutes before you can have more hot water [well, enough for laundry, a shower, etc.]
but if it first thing in the morning when no one has used anywater since the night before, you won't get any hot water till you use some, then let it heat up.. [the thing inside that makes the cycle of water continue throughout the night is broken so it won't heat until you've drained it and there's more water in it to heat.. it's odd]
bah.. my hot water tank sucks..

but ya.. i'd say talk to your landlord about that and complain.. you shouldn't be going 3 days without hot water..

Well, if you have THAT many people in your place no wonder you don't have any hot water.

I'd just use up all the hot water and let the people upstair suffer, then they'll put in a new how water tank! :c-tard:

Wow... that's a LOT of people in one house. I'm leaning towards "too many people = too many showers = cold shower for bob" theory.

You should speak to them about it... it is included in your rent, and you're paying for it, right?

If your other room mates are finishing your water that could be the problem but it seems like your pilot light has gone out. You need to relight that. This is what happened to my a few months ago.

Bob! Here's a great idea... kind of..

Call a bulding inspector, they'll find the illegal suites, everyone gets kicked out, you reapply and since you will be the only tenant you get all the hot water!

mmm.. My house is a lil different... we don't "run out" of hot water, the only time that the water gets cold is IF some one else is using the hot water AT THE SAME TIME as some one else...

If I take a shower and my mother or sister is taking a shower in the room next door, or else my mom is using the dishwasher, then the water gets cold, and seeing that you say that there are 4000 peopel living in the same house as you, then that might be the case..
while you're taking a shower, some one is probably USING THE DISH WASHER.... WASHING THEIR CLOTHES... TAKING A SHOWER.. using the hot water.... and no water left for bob : (

If you really want a hot shower, you can try during a time when not many people use it.. LIke 4 in the morning? that my work and if it does, you know it's the case...hahah...

that is illegal. there are supposed to be working smoke detectors in each suite, and windows (at least one per room) that a person could get out of in case of fire in each room of a suite
go get a tenant rights book and a lndlords responsibility book (they have them at the government offices), it tells you all about that kind of stuff. it's good to know too cuz there are lots of landlords who will try to screw you over.

i actually have a landlord/tenant rights in bc book, stole it from work, heh... but i'm a little too lazy to read it ... most of the stuff i learned in law/crim classes, so i know what my landlord is doing wrong ... the problem is that i don't really have the option of bitching about it... he gives me cheap rent, and i don't want to get on his bad side because i might need a reference in the future ...

well i have hot water now, MAN i just took a 26 minute shower, hahahaha i'm a PRUNE ...
