There was a documentary on Mukhtiar Mai on t.v. She was voted women of the year because of her courage for fighting the tribe leaders verdict for gangrape.

Rather than commit suicide or stay hush hush. Its the same women cause this case was in court right now.

P.S: 5 of the 6 who were sentenced to execution by hanging have now been aquitted by the courts only one of them has been sentenced. The sentence though has been changed from death by hanging to life imprisonment.

fact: many of these governmental bodies impose punishment for offences (non-criminal under the laws of the countires involved) against family and tribal honour.
fact: these punishments are often brutal and horrific to women.
fact:educated people of all faiths, political backgrounds, and races, including educated and committed activists IN THE COUNTRIES INVOLVED abhor the situation and actively support efforts to reduce the powers of these tribal councils.

so while you can question the motive behind the reporting, please, PLEASE acknowledge the fact that shit like this happens, and that whatever way you want to look at it, it's bullshit that deserves everyone's disgust and condemnation.

I do acknowledge these sorts of actions occur. That’s why I mentioned in my original post that " I have no doubt in my mind this stuff goes on" I have deep, long running south Asian ancestry in my blood, so these "tribal" cultures and mindsets that communities operate by are well understood by me. BUT here in the west we see a significant rise in anti south Asian and middle eastern sentiment, -this includes negative sentiment towards ANY nation/culture outside of "western" culture for that matter - and when I say "western culture" I also include a predisposition towards not paying attention to current context. One of which that sees racism being stirred up as a means to garner support for specific military action.

I made my statement because one can see everyday a subtle and sometimes obvious arrogance and hostility towards cultures, based on individual acts by members of society and somehow they think they are justified in their assessment that said nation or culture are savage/backwards/terrorists as a whole. Combine these societal attitudes with a significant ignorance to the true nature of why we hear the things we do from mainstream media, plus a growing era of war and occupation, and the support for war and occupation grows although most people would not come right forward and pledge said support.

In Canada’s own history Aboriginal women where systematically and consistently sterilized at the first available opportunity.

What is the purpose of the remarks that im making? To make sure there always exist a check on balance in public opinion of foreign cultures especially when said foreign cultures have been historically attacked, and see countless acts of racism and oppression against members of said respective culture.

With saying this, I completely agree this incident is grotesque and insane. There is no rationale of excuse for this sort of behavior. But whether we like to admit it or not, in the past these sort of stories have a significant role in garnering support for foreign and domestic aggression, when used in a particular method or fashion.

As an aside, I question why it is possible for Canadian citizens to find it easier to condemn foreign violence than it is to condemn domestic and structural violence such Canadian security certificates? Is it because there is a lack of public visibility? Perhaps that’s on purpose?
