Andre Agassi announces retirement

This will be his last year of professional tennis. after winning numerous majors, 8 grand slams, and losing a full head of hair, he's calling it quits.

right now he is playing in the US open and i have been glued into all of his games. he defeated pavel on tuesday in what was consitered one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the US open. agassi was on the break of elimination after giving up 2 sets back to back, and 4 consecutive games in the 4th set. then out of nowhere, he comes back to win the set by beating Pavel 6 games in a row! he then went on to win the next set 6-2, winning the match.

then last night he faced my favorite tennis player marcos bagdattis (ranked #8 in the world), beating him in a grueling 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3 victory. agassi out ran, out shot, and out-lasted bagdattis, a player 16 years his junior.

alot of his momentum has been coming from the crowd, who have been behind him every step of the way. there is not a single person in that arena that was not cheering for agassi.

i hope that andre wins the US open, even with opponents like roger federer, rapheal nadal, and andy roddeck. but if he can just keep feeding off of the crowd and the other players do not build any momentum, he will have a fighting chance.

he is one of the greatest players to ever set foot on the court and an inspiration to all tennis players, young and old. he will be greatly missed.

Andre's definately one of my favourite players.

I can't watch his matches though cause I heard the commentators talking about him gettin a shot to loosen his back muscles and pain so he can still play, and with that shot, it can crap out at anytime. He also quoted Andre saying something like, 'Everytime I bend down I'm afraid I won't be able to stand back up' [if the shot craps out].

So, although I love him as a tennis player, I'd be afraid to witness something like that happening during his match.

Still cheering for him though.. I was so bummed he was second to Federer last time (Wimbledon I believe?). It would be the greatest exit if he could win this last grandslam.

I been following this US OPEN alot.

Agassi actually has been playing very well.

He is playing with heart and obvious physical ailments he's hiding with pain killers and all that.

I hope he goes out on top too. I believe he wants to face roddick in the final is what he is going for.

What they been saying is true his physical game as in strength, speed, and all that have gone down but as you get older stamina wise you can maintain for great lengths of time.

i've also been watching the his last few matches, against blake and the cramp guy.

it's been pretty crazy. nothing to do with agassi, but just because he's american and it's the u.s. open, it's nice and stereotypical of the americans booing a guy who is obviously injured/cramped up.

they were not booing bagattis, they were concerned. most people were clapping to see him get up and and move around. if they were booing him they would have never done that.

if your gonna jump down their throats about booing, you should include the game before that when pavel kicked a ball out of his feet and the crowd booed him thinking he was being a sore sport.

i pray that agassi wins the US open, but i am not expecting him to do that. don't get me wrong, i want him to win BADLY, but i cannot see this within physical reach for him. i just pray to god that he has an exellent finish. one way or another, he stole the show away from every other player.

even roger federer could not steal andre's thunder, not with 21,000 people behind him.

Agassi lost eh.

Its a shame too cause in the next match there was a huge chance it was gonna be roddick barring he wins his match rite now.

That was an intense ending to his career. It was really nice to see so much love for the guy. Ever since I was a child when I learned what tennis was I've always known the name Andre Aggasi!

It was pretty emotional watching his last game and that speech he made at the end, he's been playing tennis longer than I've been alive and well I remember watching him as a little kid... he will be missed.

i dunno, nadel is sick, but i see roddick taking it. he's been playing on another level this U.S. open.

the problem with nadel is he is a one track player. he doninates on clay, but he needs to be able to manuver better on hard surface courts. and roddick has been playing both ends of the court all of this tournament. I think if roddick were to face nadel right now, he would hand him his spanish ass on a silver platter.

I think Nadal might win it. Yes he is far better on clay but I see more determination than ever this time.

Yes roddick is saving himself quite abit with his serves, but he's always had killer serves in the 136 to 140mPh area.

Roddick is feeding off the crowd.

true, he does have home court advantage.

if roddick beats hewitt, and nadal beats youzhny, they will face each other in the semi's.

kenj, i got 10 bucks on roddick. if i win you pay me when i come for a visit, and if i lose, i'll pay you then as well.

do we have ourselves a deal?

I can't believe Nadal lost. Actually its not that he lost. Its how he lost.

So bets off eh.

Roddick looks like he's gonna win the whole thing. Only person I can see beating him rite now is Federer. Possibly Blake but doubt it

i never said he would, but the way this tournament has been going (agassi def. 8th seeded bagdatis, unseeded nobody youzhny def. 2nd seeded nedal), anything is possible.
