I'm using a pirated version of XP - so i'm lacking in the update department and I cant find away how to turn of genuine advantage.

Seriously man, how the hell does that happen? Check msconfig or something, disable some startup programs and services. Run a freaking spyware scan already.

8 minutes on XP is bad. You can be running 512 of RAM and you shouldn't be getting half that.

If i was to reinstall windows, do you think it would fix it? Perhaps a HDD issue?

I might have the answer, even with everything disabled in msconfig, there's 22 processes still running.
Last time I reformatted was the last time I put in windows, so 6 months ago

this is less of a function of the OS and more of a function of what the operator has done with it

22 processes isn't that bad. If you're not hearing anything wrong with the drive you're probably ok on that front.

The inital startup is the most brutal.

then windows logo comes up. That itself takes 8 minutes.
