It was shot with video cameras to get the cost down & that's why the camera moves so fast in some scenes which makes it more scary. Canon XL-1.

i'm pretty sure they didn't use those cameras to get the cost down, but intsead used them for the intended 'realistic and gritty' effect. the director has directed enough films (the beach, trainspotting) that he would have had a large enough budget to get film cameras if he wanted. it was a conscious choice to use the video.

that's the one. i'm thinking about watching it again right now.

i know that "28 days later" is more "realistic" but "dawn of the dead" was just a fun zombie flick and the music was definately alot better.

i never used to be into these zombie movies but watching the resident evils has opened me up into a whole new genre of movies. before i was satisfied with watching about the apocolypse, comedies, gangster movies, with just a taste of romantic comedy. but now i want to see the dead rising and fucking all of you over.

any other good recommendations? next rentals are definately going to be the rob zombie movies (his fucking last name is "zombie" for crying out loud) and another one called "undead". give me some good ones folks.

their budget was so bad that they had to hire people from england to do all the acting.

but, seriously now, i don't think that their budget could have been all that low. the opening scenes had all those famous places devoid of all people. i don't know how much it would cost to do that, but i don't think it could be very cheap.

Confirming information about video making this movie less expensive and easier to shoot, here: (American Society of Cinematographers)
http://www.theasc.com/magazine/july03/sub/index.html#

Cost was a big factor in that they could work faster with video, plus the cameras & smaller crews are less expensive. It was shot in London which is a city with a huge population (16 million) & they made it look empty after the virus thing killed everyone by closing down streets which can only be done for a very short time.

They were using up to 8 cameras at once which would be very expensive with film. When they use film cameras they need to frequently check the cameras for filmstock debris ruining the shot and that takes a few minutes - not necessary with video.

Even though a director has done good movies he does not have unlimited money for whatever new movie he wants to make - it depends on how risky and successful they think the movie will be. SInce this was a "zombie movie" a lot of management people would think it might not attract a big audience and would not finance it very high regardless of the director. So if the director asks for a smaller amount of money to make a risky movie, they are more likely to approve the budget.

I really enjoyed 28 days later. But I must admit I got really creeped out by it for a long time after. One of my friends has the "infected" act down. And he would chase me down the street acting all crazy because it disturbed me.

I was really sad when the dad got infected. :(

Dawn Of The Dead:
After seeing Land Of The Dead, the remake of this George Romero classic looks so much better. The whole running zombies thing blows. It totally defeats the purpose of them being zombies. Danny Boyle didn't even consider 28 Days Later a horror movie (even though he ripped the whole last half off from Day Of The Dead). In any case, don't fuck around with any shitty remake before you see the original. Blue States' "Season Song" is really dope, though (the theme song from 28 Days Later). At least the Dawn remake captured some of the original suspense: Land just blew ass from start to finish. Romero really lost it sometime in the 1980's.

If you've seen the originals, Land Of The Dead actually continues on storywise from Day Of The Dead (just compare "Bob" to that idiot screaming gas station attendant from Land). George Romero didn't direct the Dawn Of The Dead remake or have anything to do with it except it was based on his original 1978 script. Except for the use of the word "dead," the remake and Land are totally unrelated.

Every time I'm sick, I like to watch the original trilogy (Night Of The Living Dead, Dawn Of The Dead, Day Of The Dead). But George really put me in a tough spot with Land. It's sad to think the Dawn Of The Dead remake guys now know more about what makes a good zombie movie than the man who practically originated the genre. Still, Shaun Of The Dead is a source of infinite hope (Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright actually made a cameo in Land).

shaun of the dead was great, I have the ultimate edition of the original dawn of the dead.

I agree you can't mess with a classic, but the new ones are fun to watch.

I loved 28 Days Later. I just recently bought the DVD, and I still get chills when I watch it.

SPOILER: I loved the scene in the house where the infected come in because they see candle light, and they have to kill their other companion. The look in his eyes. *shudder*

i love the scene where he's in the church (repent the end is extremely fucking nigh) and he's stupid enough to say "hello?". you just see a couple faces turn up towards him. great scene.
