Kuma is on a distinguished road
Tonight On Art Of beatz Radio: R.Demon (Macbre Unit, UK)

Hour 1: R. Demon (Macabre Unit, UK)

Macabre Unit started as an outfit about 5 years ago and was originally started by 9ner, then known as k-9. He started it out to be a “Grime” outfit, 2-3 producers, and a handful of mc’s (9ner, Switch, Shaq, Nasher, Blaze, Logical, Gamma, d.i.a, and nusense). At this time R.Demon was still well into his Drum & Bass, until 3 months down the line 9ner convinced him to join the unit as a dj/producer, this was always going to happen, 9ner and R.Demon having worked together for a number of years on the Drum & Bass circuit.

Once R.Demon joined the unit things got moving, 9ner having a number of hits under his belt such as Slow Jam, It’s all About, Dem na ready and Sense, these tracks appeared on Square Records and Zodiac Records, they were absolutely massive releases. Then came Take Time and Or Else, 2 tracks produced by 9ner and R.Demon, Take time went to number 1 in the 1xtra chart, and naturally once that happened we got called on to 1xtra to appear on Richie vibe vees show. Since that first show we’ve appeared on 4 other 1xtra shows, and also appeared once on Radio 1. A few years down the line, Macabre slowly became one of the most notorious crews on the roads. Releasing a number of mix cds, live sets in clubs, radio appearances on stations such as Rinse FM etc, the unit also grew in size, taking on more producers and mcs. As time went on, the unit started to change its sound, becoming darker and more technical, this went down well with a lot of people, but naturally it didn’t go down to well with some of the diehard fans. In the last 2 years we’ve been developing a sound which is darker than any kind of 140bpm music, we call it “SKUM”, the word says it all really, it’s a very Drum & Bass influenced sound, along with a fusion of grime and dubstep. In 2006 R.Demon and 9ner had a release on there own Macabre Unit Recordings imprint, these tracks were Horror Show, Juggernaught and Killa Bee. This 3 track ep went down very well, Horror Show still gets spoken about to this day.

After that release it took a while for people to take to our sound, the 1 place we felt closest to in a genre sense was the dubstep scene, so we started to put ourselves about there. One of the first projects we worked on was “6 feet below sound”, it was a 9 track, free mix, with pure Skum production on there, it went down a treat, we are currently up to volume 2 of that project which can be purchased at Macabre Unit Store - Welcome to the world of Skum, all the promoting that’s gone into the dubstep scene has payed off, with R.Demon having a 3 track ep signed to “Boka Records” which is due for release in early September 2007,and also his remix of “dead beat” which is also due for release in September,. There is also a lot of other labels in talks with the unit with regards to signing material. We still feel that the scene has only heard the beginning of the Skum sound, there is so much more from us artists to come. …… Watch this space …. Macabre Unit Recordings 07 ….. thanks for your time.
