Shambles peeps - REVIEWS!

If someone has already started something somewhere, sorry... too lazy to look.

Some of my thoughts...
--> Taking an RV was definitely the way to go -- 30 degree days and 2 degree nights, dust, proper food, a bathroom, a shower and numerous other examples are why an RV is where it's at!

--> Our camp was wicked... a few RV's, some tents, some cars and wicked people -- Vinyl Ritchie and his girl, Czech, Matt the Alien and his wife, Smalltown DJ's, Ali B., Mama Miche and Kenzie (Bitchin) and friends, Krafty, Jon - Fort Knox Five, Steve - Thunderball, Precise and myself. Some good times for sure. The 80's and rock parties that we threw at our site before we went out every night were interesting. LOL.

--> Sets to remember - Z-Trip (SICK), some of Bassnectar's stuff (not all), Vinyl Ritchie vs. Matt the Alien (3 hour set with 45's) on the beach - Mason of Aphrodesiac Sound System's set was just before this which was also really good, Sunday after noon from 2 till 7PM was the Fractal Funk Sessions w/Smalltown DJ's, All Good Funk Alliance, Krafty, Fort Knox Five, Vinyl Ritchie, Chili and more, Hmmmm... Krafty's set on Friday night in The Village was one of the best I've heard him play - Precise will have my back on that one... Bassbin Twin's set in the Forrest was also SICK! - The crowd was eating up everything he was giving them via his Ableton Live set... Neighbor's stuff was good and funky...

Hmmmmmm what am I forgetting?

There were some reviews in the http://fnk.ca/board/f9/electronic/of...29/index7.html.

I think I liked Krafty's set on Saturday better, but I think that had more to do with the fact that I could actually dance for longer than 30 seconds without getting hit. Both were great for sure. Bassbin Twins were sick. Threw down some killer tracks. Bassnector's beach set was weak. It was pretty crazy how many people were on the beach at 5am for his set though. He played pretty good for the last hour or so.

The amount of dust really sucked. When I blew my nose before I left on Monday, everything that came out was literally black. Not pretty at all.

I thought the Portal was pretty disappointing this year. Friday's music was terrible. Saturday's psy-trance was crap, and Sunday wasn't much better.

Main stage was better this year, but still not a particularily great stage. Way better setup and lights this year though.

Beach I was barely at. Pretty much was only there for part of Bassnector's set, and went to bed not long after he started.

Rock Pit I didn't go to much either. Only thing I really remember about the rock pit was walking back to my camp on Sunday morning after watching a bit of Bassnector's set, I seen some chick just laughing her ass off, so I went over to check out what was going on. There was one guy who looked absolutely fucked out of his mind dancing by himself in there. That was probably the worst display of dancing I've ever seen.

Fractal Forest rocked, plain and simply. I thought it had the best sound, and it had tons of great house and breaks all weekend.

I asked Z-Trip what he thought of Shambles and this was is reply:

I honestly thought that parties like that didn't happen anymore... Out in the woods... bass bumping, crowd fully into it... no ego's... plenty of love in the mix... everyone there for the music... We used to have 'em all the time in the late 80's/early 90's, but somehow they all just stopped... But Shambhala kept it going... and improved on it... They've maintained it for 10 years with no corporate sponsors!!! So dope!

I feel like lately the electronic music scene in general has lost something...the hip hop scene too.... It's connection with it's people is at an all time low ... People just "MAKE" this music now, and the audience hears it, and sometimes connects with it... but most of the time not many people "experience" the music the way it should be experienced...The purpose and soul of how and why this music happened in the first place sometimes gets lost. Shambhala brought my faith back... I felt like everyone there was connecting and receiving... and giving back! It was great to see and to be a part of that connection.

There aren't too many places left out there that really cater to what it's all about... Shambhala is one of the last places in my opinion...

I'm going back for sure...

He'd best be back in 08, cuz I think I will be as well.

After all, I went in 02, 04 and 06. It's only fair.

Speaking of which.. when are early bird tickets on sale? :D

Z-trip really had a great time with that set i think. He was interacting with the audience and when the bassbins cut out for 20 minutes or so he didn't even make a big deal out of it like other dj's, he just kept the crowd positive and played a wicked set.

Krafty also had a great set and the place was paaaacked. Skream's bass was so heavy it would throw you off balance. People kept looking around with this startled look, not understanding where these low low grooves were coming from.

I knew skream would kill it.... Yep that my friend is dubstep.... It can ONLY be experienced and understood on a big system... Headphones or home speakers just doesn't do any justice.

There was an MC too and they had some new track that they rewound twice, it tore the place up and they said it was even their first time hearing it on a big system.

Oh and i forgot to mention, Z-trip said that he enjoyed himself so much that he would come back again for free. Glad to see that he actually meant it.

.

Word....
Did he play a track that sounded like a dubstep remix of Faithless - Insomnia ? Because a producer that go's by the name of Benga created a dubstep remix that is turning heads like crazy. However right now only a few major dubstep dj's such as Skream has his hands on it....

The sound quality was awesome however that had challenges at every stage this year -- all good though as they eventually sorted them.

The sound techs/engineers onsite are some of the best I've seen.

That's why I found it strange. Don't recall a single issue w/ sound at the 3 I've attended.

With everyone using SERATO/LIVE etc, this year the tech issues were inevitable, the sound guys are the best there are - they did an awesome job.

I have soo much to say about this year, will post more later.

Huh?

Last I ever heard of him it was all stuff on his label. Maybe a novelty track or two, but all either his stuff or Evil Nine's or someone else he's sponsored.

Kinda like the Oakenfold of breaks in that respect.

Then again, I wasn't there, but that's what I remember of seeing him a few years back.

Quite a different experience for myself this year, as it was a solo trip. With no particular camp or crew to hang with most of the time, I spent a good deal of Shambhala just wandering from camp to camp, stage to stage, and gathering to gathering, striking up random conversations with random people. Be waaay too lengthy a post to cover it all, so here's some pretty pictures instead!

That last one shows just how dusty she got there. And that was just Thursday night!

i can't even begin to explain that set to you. the bass.......fuuuuuck. you couldn't even raise up your lighta 'cause the bass just blows it the fuck out!!!!! he seriously loved it there. he'd drop a track, as soon as the bass hit he'd throw his headphones down and start bangin around the decks it was by farrrrrrrrr the best set i saw. bassnectors 5am glitch dub set was fuckin killer too.

such an amazing experience. thanks to my friends who got me there, you rock my socks seriously. i can't even begin to give shoutouts 'cause i LOVE all of you the same. we had a little shambels family, it was so rad. wouldn't have wanted anyone else in the world there.

my favourite moment i think was sleeping thursday night, getting up early friday, making a vodka redbull, grabbing a joint and heading down to the beach stage and jamming to michael red droppin reggae in the morning sun........i could live that moment forever
