The defects of FAS are dependant on many factors; amount consumed, timing of consumption. As well the factors of the mother and child are important, such as genetic, nutritional and metabolic factors.
The evidence is clear that there is no risk to a child when the pregnant woman consumes no more than one drink per day. Hanson(1) “Victims of fetal alcohol syndrome often experience mental health problems, disrupted school experience, inappropriate sexual behavior, trouble with the law, alcohol and drug problems, difficulty caring for themselves and their children, and homelessness”. The misconceptions of FAS are addressed by Ann Streissguth, Ph.D., University of Washington (4) such that “Some people with FAS are mentally retarded and some are not. People with FAS can have normal and above average intelligence. While there is injury to the brain, each affected person will have specific areas of strength and weaknesses.” According to North American studies, mostly of Alaskan statistics, the highest rates of FAS occur in Native Americans.
