And i wasn't trying to ask someone to come all the way here for flyers, i was just trying to see if someone was ALREADY coming this way... |

I was a little jumpy at your first post but regardless, to answer the questions some were asking, many people don't know that promotional items like flyers need to be declared as they have transactional value [the proceeds of any susequent resale, disposal, or use of the imported merchandise that accrue, directly or indirectly to the seller].
Yes I know you are not selling the flyers and what not but it similar to the records issue. You can no longer say your trip is for pleasure as it is now considered business. I was going to call customs and ask their 'official' view on this but the US Customs Website has to be the most deorganized ever. To what Lisa said about it magazines etc, obviously there is a large gray area for every rule regulation law etc. and to what extend will they take these you never really know. I've seen promoters grilled by customs agents trying to get them to say they were a promoter and there for promotional purposes so I know some are catching on... just as they caught on to djs performing cross boarder etc. This being said like any other prohibited item they use their discretion... they may let you through, the may take them away, they may turn you around (this goes against YOU remember) they may investigate further -- you may get the car swab! Guh. Enough justifying my outbreaks. Last edited by LDUB; May 11, 05 at 04:58 PM. |

that's the first thread i deleted in a while. if you'd like, i could make another outlining the legalities of transporting such items? or maybe LDUB should do it, seeing as she seems to be very knowledgable on the topic. ps- to ldub... re:records... so why is it then, that you can say you are bringing records for pleasure, but you can't bring flyers for pleasure? |

Sure give it a try, as mentioned they can still turn you away but hey, to bring them for pleasure you have to declare them. When you do so it is at the discretion of the officer to believe you, or not to believe you. There are always ways around things.
However most would assume that these things would not need to be declared at all... my point is that they do. It is illegal NOT to. |

I'm not necessarily knowledgable on the subject I'm just going from past experiences and a little research.
I like to be informed before I cross into a foreign country... US/Canada may not be as bad as others but I still like to know what I'm getting myself into. |

And, I wasn't trying to argue your points dear, I was simply trying to get something which I must have done, done.
I personally, am not too worried about the legalities of this action simply because a> I don't have time to and b> from my experiences, it should work out fine. *Shrugs* thanks for the info though. |

I'm sorry, you weren't trying to argue my points, dear... I believe that is exactly what you did.
Personally even if I had managed to do something like this and it had 'worked out fine' I still wouldn't feel comfortable asking others to do it, without advising them of the possible consequences! |

Lauren was merely pointing out the dangers of carrying something/anything across the border for someone. Wasn't there quite a bit of scandal down in Seattle regarding someone who asked people to carry stuff for her across the border recently?! Regardless how little you think it is, I as a promoter would not do it unless doing it through the proper channels, and I would never ask someone to do that for me. Maybe linking your "homies" to the website is just as easy and a little less risky! |
