How much do top DJ's make per show?

Vague question obviously, but just curious as to how much a top DJ might make while playing at a small club? For example, Ferry is spinning at Richard's next week and tickets are only 10 bones in advance, how the hell can they afford to pay for his night + plane ride, etc. ? Figured all together they'd owe him a good 10k?

10k? i don't think so.

"Top DJ's" don't really go on tours to make money. They go on tours for promotion. They get peoples' interests... and sell more CD's/Singles that way. thats where the money is.

actually you got it ass backwards.

top dj's/producers make the music which then starts getting them booked for gigs which is how they make the big bucks.

first off, most djs charge twice as much for a friday or saturday date than for a weekday.

second, they charge much more for "special nights" like new year's and halloween...

with that out of the way, most DJs don't have a set fee, they base their fee on the size of the venue among other factors. So while Tiesto might charge $10000 (or whatever, who knows what he actually charges) to play 2 hours at an ibizan superclub or a european festival or massive, he might only charge $2000 to play 2 hours at a clubnight at the commodore on a weekday. a lot of it has to do with touring schedules. it's pretty rare for a promoter to fly a guy over from outside of north america, or even to bring someone over from the east coast just to play one gig and fly them back. most of these guys go on tour for a week or two in north america, and hit the east coast on one week, and the west coast the next, then back home. during that time they want to fit in as many gigs as possible, because if they're not playing for someone chances are that they're sitting around doing nothing and paying for their own hotel room, thereby eating up the profits that they're making on tour. some times you can pick up a guy really cheap just because his agent has dates to fill.

ASS BACKWARDS is right!!

there's almost NO money to be made in electronic music on records. most singles might make the artist a profit of $5,000 to $10,000 for a TOP SELLER. a good dj can make that in two weeks, playing shows for $2000 each. i would guess that most singles (other than massive chart hits) make the artist about $1000, which is less than one night of dj'ing. sales of the hits is what propels the bookings, that's where the money is. but you can't be a big shot dj and not produce your own tunes, it has to be balanced between both. a lot of dj's-turned-producers lose their mixing skillz from not playing out for such a long time, so it's a fine line to walk

speaking of which... NYE is coming up... someone paid Paul Oakenfold almost a cool million for a NYE party; someone offered Sasha to play TWO events on NYE couple years ago for about $2mil with a charter helicopter from one party to the other.

no doubt, i know from talking to some artists that smaller independent releases that are only on vinyl they might see 500 bux a side...

then i stand corrected.
I remember reading an article about this topic. but that was about rock bands like Guns N roses and Eagles.
but you're right. its like apples and oranges. these bands sold millions and millions of albums.

yeah that's how the "big labels" work, for bands like that...

but in reality....
that's the EXACT reason why the music business is crashing!!
they lose money on touring to support a format of music that can be stolen.

fucking stupid move if you ask me
