Book Clubs

anyone join one?

anyone know how things go?

recently joined one and I have a month to read a really tiny first book, it will probably take me a couple days to read it. I don't know what I should be making notes on and what to discuss at the next meeting,

any help?

I'm not in a Book Club... but just jot down the odd idea or quote from the Book that you find interesting or different. Maybe say things you like about the style of writing or the Characters.

Failing that, just say "This book fucking sucked... WHERE ARE THE PICTURES?!"

in my experience, book clubs are for pretentious people who think they understand great literature, and older women who aren't getting laid so they go and get trashed on cheap wine with a book by their side.

I hope you're not either one of these. . you should save yourself the hassle and just enjoy the book.

well, i've never been the pretentious reading type, thats why I joined

I don't know what books I should read so I'm excited to hear what others think are good books.

I don't really know how to differenciate (sp) the styles of writing.

this is just to get me motivated to read more and expand my mind with good literature.

I'm not afraid to tell them that I did not like the books they say are good

Thread should be renamed to "reccommend some good books to read"

On that note, you should read American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis.

not really
because if i don't have a deadline to read the book, I won't read the book

I like the fact that I have to read it, and then talk about the book.

I usually put the book down if I don't like it, and I know there are some good books that I should be reading

I have never in my life been able to put down a book even when bad. I have to read it cover to cover, otherwise it feels like unfinished business.

There was one book that I recently finished, that I had put down about a year and a half ago. Took me a long time to get back into it, but I did, and it turned out interesting in the end. Go figure.

Yeah, I hate leaving stuff not done like that.

I had an RCMP History that was 1/2 finished for two years and then I found it and finished it just because. It was dry, kinda boring but it's completed.

P.S. Sam Steele was the man.

and i'd only ever join a book club if i had a list of the books they'd be reading ahead of time so i could opt out of attending a meeting for a book i didn't want to read

like peter pan

Sure, now you'll just have to find someone else to buy it or borrow it from the library to read along with you, or you could watch the movie.

Like any book>movie story, you'll find theres always much more detail in the book, which if captivating enough, will leave you reading until you fall asleep. I find reading by schedule reminds me too much of high school, and having to read all those shitty books by a certain deadline. Discussion was mandatory, which wouldnt be so much of a pain as long as the book didnt suck, but most of the times it did.
