"The opposite sex is an obsession"
*I'm not looking for any advice here - this is just a regular discussion*
Personally, I've noticed that the opposite sex, to MOST people these days - IS an obsession (if not a compulsive one). Do you think that is true? Think about a hundred years ago or more - how would one view the opposite sex back then? I honestly think that back then people used to view the opposite sex as a "tool" to help mankind survive, and they respected that "tool" and gave it its privacy when it needed to be private and they didn't call it every hour, etc. Now we look at the opposite sex as a "toy" that fulfills compulsive obsessions to call them whenever you please to fulfill that temporary boost of happiness you sometimes get or to "plug a hole" as some guys call it. Nowadays people totally obsess over their bf/gf that it's the only thing on their mind and there is nothing else to fulfill/accomplish in this world. True or false? Anyway, I don't really know where I'm going with this but I just wanted to get a discussion going after I saw how some people live their lives... Now your turn. It's hard to compare to different periods of time because we were'nt there, and history isn't accurate...I think humans will always obsess over each other...It is natural, because we need it sexually, and mentally...we are programmed that way....
It's jus fucked when it all becomes truely obsessive.....then it's pathetic....I hate it when people only think about there sig other and start to lack other areas of their life slep esp when it's not for love and mainly for the fear of not being lonely........So many times I have seeen friends jus brush off everyone/thing because they are "obsessed"......gay shit..

More broadly, maybe it's more accurate to say that SEX in general has been and always will be a focus of society's obsession. After all, it is the source of life and perpetuation of the human race....
I don't think that there has necessarily been an increase or decrease in sexual interest towards either sex over the years....I do believe that cultures have evolved to become more public about sex and have changed the way they react to sex...While our perceptions of sexual interests differ cross-culturally and cross-generationally, i don't necessarily think there is a greater obsession over sex partners than there was many years ago. It is also possible that you're going through a phase in your life where the people in your life's close radius are obsessing over their lovers. Our own life experiences shape our thoughts on life.

I dont think anything has really changed, its simply that the way these desires are expressed has changed as western society has become more permissive.

Yes we are programmed to do it and i believe the hedonistic attribute of many people is what turns that into an obsession.
Like Sarah said we can't make prescriptive statements about history because we weren't there. But what we do know is that it was definately a taboo subject and as robyn said people married much younger and probably didn't have as many partners as today (unless you were trying to keep your dynasty alive or something). Today, i think that it has become an obsession because the sexual revolution of the 60s and the advent of birth control made sex a sort of rebelling cause for youth allowing it to be more widely excepted, eventually, in everyday life. Now with all the different ways we can be solicited in modern society it has become even more entrenched and has garnered the ability to play the strings of our innate desires, sort of like fast food. Remember prostitution is one of the oldest professions so it's not like the objection and mistreatment of women is something knew. We are just more surrounded by it in the urban individualistic world.

fear of being alone. fear of being hurt. fear of not being a success. Fear. Perhaps the most vital and influencial emotion that we have. Vital cuase its a program of survival. Influential in that its a perfect, and well developed,transport vehicle for memes. i think thats a good reason for people obsessing. and right now our society is COMPLETLY AND DISGUSTINGLY ENTRENCHED IN A ERA OF FEAR. its that biological drive to procreate........its nature's program. and we follow it to a tee....we have no choice. its important to the physical program. the spiritual however...........

True that Revolver - those are words wisely spoken. I agree with every single thing you said.
But the spiritual - is a whole different story. I don't even see how spiritual comes into play with relationships but I'm sure it plays an important role on one's understanding of the rules of relationships....
