I think my philsophy class just reiterated to me what i already knew, but I guess some people just really need to be taught common sense. I never understood how people could not understand sociology but i guess it happens

remember that logical thinking and critical thinking are two very different things. One insinuates, the other denies.

yeh but they teach you about critical thinking in the 1st year, but it takes many more to actually put it to use or to fully understand what i means to think critically. You have to be able to think from different perspectives and to look beyond the shroud. Things like that only comes with age and experience. Being able to look at all the different perspectives in society and make an informed decision based on the way you personally feel takes a lot of time.

Because most of the time you are just taking someone else's critical perspective and applying it to support your own needs and goals. You read a book and go AHA i got it, then you realize that there's another book out there that disproves your revelation. There's always another theory out there to disprove you. To form your opinion and to develop it beyond that takes a lot of work. It's called grad school.

anyone can read the propaganda model and be omg i can see the political economy of media, but how can you take it beyond that? What's your original contribution? That won't come for years.

It can only be taught and learned,not acheived by divine right. However ones receptivity to critical thought and thier level of comprehension is entirely subjective therefor we're at a moot point where a pissing contest will ensue as per usual.

True, but there is an actual method to critical thinking. That can be trained. Once you have that though it's like they're tools. The actual critical thinking takes a bit more effort.

Anyways, those who think critically on an instinctual basis are the exception rather than the norm. Most people are easily programmable. Carnies call them "marks". I'm a pretty bad one, but usually willingly so. Sometimes it's fun to be taken for a ride, as long as you understand that's all it is.

but as soon as i read that instantly i thought "well yeah theres a 'method', college profs need some way to validate their jobs"

sometimes its actually those 9/11 truth people who tend to be more critical thinkers

ive been through college, i love nothing more then to chat with people who cling on with dear life to the educational system cause without that they would be lost.

I might actually have a critical thinking book kicking around from my first-year psych course you can borrow. It's fairly small - about as big as Strunk & White's Elements Of Style. We basically used it during our tutorials to re-examine preconceptions and challenge ideas. It's pretty well done.
