Im gonna back up Italia_420 on this one, I agree with him, to begin with...

All the djs that play at most parties nowadays are either a) booked accroding to their DEMO's or b) how much wang they sucked to get it.

Which brings me back to a)... any dj that gives out a demo should be able to follow up the skills at the party, and not the otherway around. Anyone can do a copy and paste demo, if a mix didnt flow, cut it and re-record.... wrong, your not a headliner thats releasing a cd thats goingt to be published and distributed world wide... so dont try to cover up a mistake, if you fucked up... re record from the beggning, its called learning! Ive come across allot of djs that claim it was a one shot recording, then live their miserably fucked up, sure it happens to all of us, but not over and over again.
Stick with the one shot recording technique, becuase if you really have the skill... then your demo and live set should have similar odds and ends and will get you booked more often.

If I WAS A PROMOTER i would pay according to their reputability, wether theyre good djs that dont flaunt, or if theyre complete superstar djs that have no skill, aswell as attitude, if someone is gonna tell me how much they should get payed with MY money that I invested... sorry sir you arent the one putting on the show, and also BOTHER me about it prior, during and after the show, they generally arent worth paying. Later to hear roumers about this and that... I wonder why. Hell id rather give your share to the quiet dj that stood around til the end, spun a good set and offered to play for free to begin with... SURPRISE... YOU GOT PAYED!

Its funny how more than half these fucking djs expect 100$ for playing...
Be greatful that you have a gig to begin with with the shape that the scene is in nowadays. Its hard for the promoter to make money to begin with, let alone paying all the djs equally, with all the break even margins soo high in todays scene. Its common courtesy to pay a dj even if the party made very little or NO money. The trend has been lately (and we are talking multiple companies) to pay according to skill, timeslot and attitude. Stupid cocky djs that bicker about being payed before the party has even been thrown, that have no skill and demand a whopping guest list will be resulted to a not soo good view on them, its common sense, its like bossing someone around that you shouldnt to begin with. That leads to in some cases not being payed at all and being avoided which has been done (I have been through the "NOT BEING PAYED" trick before but their reason was they "didnt make money" and that "I was just an opening dj")... I would understand if the company didnt make money, but it the company throws another rave later on... "MY ASS YOU DIDNT MAKE MONEY!" But its still common courtesy to toss a dj 20-50$ to cover a) gas money to get out there and b) to pay off the credit card bill that they racked up buying records.

In the end a real DJ would suck it up becuase they got the expousre thanks to the company. Becuase in reality who books unknown people that dont pull? Its a risky bussines, its like booking a headliner that noone has heard before...that will be a shitty pull and will break the party.
Even the most respected locals in Van that have been playing over 5+ years dont recieve their desired 150$. Becuase its hard to make money with everyone demanding a 100$, back in the day it was easily accomplishable due to the Plaza of Nations and other venues yielding such high results of turn outs and then there was enough money in the end to pay everyone.

The proper mentality shoud be, coming to play for free, and walking out playing for free, if the money is handed, then take it, its going back to pay off the debt you racked up buying the vinyls anyways...

To conclude... MAGGIE IS GONNA RIP IT UP WITH MEA!!!

No disrespect Ben, but is seems like you have it pretty twisted.

Promoter needs DJs, so he goes to book them. Upon being booked, it is established whether the DJ is being paid or not and how much. Regardless of skill or experience, this has to be done, so both parties know what to expect... if a DJ wants money and the promoter is not willing to pay, then on to the next DJ, simple as that.

What's not cool is when a fee has been established, and then the promoter welches on the deal after the DJs set for some BS reason like they didnt like the set, didnt make money, etc... (Your party bombing is not an excuse to not pay the talent.. It's not like you can do the same thing to the venue owner, security, or sound guys.. Besides, you'd think a promoter shelling out thousands of dollars on venue/headliners/etc, would have the capacity to budget an extra couple hundred dollars for DJs, the lifeblood of the party)

Another problem is the DJs.. I've seen so many DJs get pissed after not geting paid after a gig. Later I discovered that they had never made an agreement on their DJ fee, or they just assumed that the promoters knew their fee. I mean, it's one thing if you get regularly booked with someone (by the 5th booking, they should know what you charge $X), but when someone books you for the first time, don't assume they are gonna want to pay you!

Basically it all comes down to this: If you're a promoter booking a DJ with the intention of not paying them, you need to make that clear when you make the booking, or else you're an unprofessional sleazeball.

On the same token, if you're a DJ, you have to be less naive (don't assume you're gonna get paid), and protect your neck.

Evolve pays the DJs that expect to get paid. Some newcomers simply ask to play for exposure or for guestlist. Furthermore, we pay DJs what we say we'll pay and this sum is negotiated before the event. What we won't do is be bullied into paying a DJ MORE MONEY after the fact. If a DJ is unhappy with his or her fee it should be addressed before or AT THE EVENT, NOT AFTER THEY HAVE ACCEPTED PAYMENT. Lastly, Evolve does not pay more money to DJs simply because the party "did well".
