Because we surround ourselves in all these time consuming forms of entertainment: TV, stereo, computer, internet, video games, etc. That it's hard to keep focused on doing actual work because there are so many funner things you could be doing instead.
I find it works best when you are working on a computer that doesn't have internet access and only has Microsoft word or whatever program you need to be using for your current assignment. Keep enough food and drinks around you to last till you're done so you don't have to walk to the kitchen and possibly sit down for a break that lasts longer than you intended.
