Wheat is needed for:

= Major food source (bread, cereal, pasta, pastries, baked goods etc etc etc)
= Food for Cattle and other live stock
= Beer, alcohol, vodka
= Bio fuel (cars etc)

We will loose A LOT more than just the bread for our sandwiches. And environmentalist thought it was the depleating suply of fresh water that would bring us to starvation.
