I give money to street performs. They put on a show and work for what they get. Fucking street urchins that beg for change while smoking and eating pizza at the same time. Fuck I wish I had my camera that night.

i refuse to give beggers money

however, sometimes i go into mcdicks and buy like 4 hot chocolates and just give them out to people who look like they need it most. at least that way i know the money I spend is actually doing some good for them (rather than them buying drugs etc). my mom does that everyday. she works at some accounting firm near the waterfront centre in downtown. so she walks down burrard and she always buys an extra coffee and gives it to a needy person.

Once or twice a month I'll go into McD's and buy everyone who happens to be begging on either side of the street at that moment lunch.

Beats giving them cash for drugs/cigarette/alcohol.

i saw this segment on 20/20 one time about con-artist street beggers. They had hidden video cameras and stuff and the guy walked around downtown filming beggers...this one begger managed to make like 20 bucks in an hour...they filmed him getting up...walking around the corner...and getting into his new pathfinder and driving away.

not insinuating that all beggers are con-artists but it did make me more aware that perhaps some "scamming" is going on

You know what is really funny? People's perceptions on giving people money.

If I were to go out on the street, walk up to a couple of businessmen and ask them for a loonie to make a phone call because it's an emergency and hand them my business card so I can reimburse them, I bet I'd get $5 easy from them.

A bunch of friends and I were leaving the Keg Caesar's and this guy runs up in a suit carrying a briefcase and spoke with a British accent. Says someone took his wallet and ID, no passport and needs $20 to get to his hotel in Richmond. My friend gives him a $20.

We give him shit for doing that but he thinks this guy is for real.

We get into my car, drive around and see this guy try to pull the same stunt on Robson. My buddy wanted to go get his money back and give him a beating. LOL! :Kam:

Strangely enough I don't get asked that often for change... maybe because I look like raver trash when I'm downtown. Beggars piss me off though. Especially the ones that try and hit on me and call me pretty lady and stuff *shudder* I hate it when they do that... it really creeps me out. I'll occasionally give them a smoke or something but that's about it.

There is however one guy I would give money too. He's generally in Gastown... you know the guy who sings dirty songs... like stuff about Barbi being a slut *snicker* that guys cool... I swear if I ever gave money to a bum it would be him!!

Me and my mom discuss this topic so many times , my mom get so upset w/ young ppl begging , she always say " i don't understand them , i come from a third world country , busted my ass and now i'm a nurse !" . I totally agree w/ all of u , i have been able to walk right by them lots of time , but all of a sudden i haven't .... i start to feel sorry for them .

About a month ago i was walking by my old neighborhood (victoria st. in Vancouver ) and i couldn't believe all the beggers i saw ...... it seems to me that ppl are becoming more and more sad.

Sure it's easy to rant about the ones who beg for money, but do you know how it feels to be on the begging side? Cuz I sure DON'T. haha. But Aimee and I went out one day to see what it would be like to be "bums" for a day. So I guess we fit the description of the people who Winston hates. I guess it's a tad bit different cuz Aimee and I both have jobs. And we only did it for fun..

I can't imagine how horrible it is to be on the begging side. While aimee and I were "asking" for money the dirty looks we got were horrible. I can't really deal with people giving me such horrid looks all the time, I can be pretty sensitive. I'm suprirsed we managed that day. It was weird, after a while you kind of get desperate and become numb to any thought or feeling. You have to break out of ur shell and juss go and ask. Become blind to the dirty looks people give you..

I mean I'm sure there are lots of scamming losers out there. Actually I know there are. But it's also a pain in the ass being on the "begging" side. the one that automatically gets classified into the "scamming loser pathetic child" side... After being judged/spat on/yelled at/ (ex,,"why don't u get a fucking job!") imagine how YOU would feel? I think after so much insult you almost become THEIR defintion of who you *are* and should be.

its easy for us cuz all we have to do is say "NO I HAVE NO CHANGE" or "GO GET A FUCKING JOB"... We only have to deal with them ONCE in while

I got a job at Playland with 0 work experience. And other places will hire them too.

I know not all of them are like this. But if they REALLY wanted to get out of the rut they're in. They'll get real help. There are hostiles and services that can give them the help they need.

I don't want to sound mean. I'll help out in soup kitchens and stuff. But I jsut think giving money si pointless.

I used to always give $$$ to those squeegee guyz downtown,,, just so they wouldn't touch my car. I guess I felt kinda guilty or somethin' drivin' a Lexus,,, and thought to myslef... Hey that could be me. I'd never squeegee or beg,,, but I might not have a home/car/$$$ someday. I've probably given away approx. $300.00 to those bums...

However,,, my views have changed...

A few months ago,,, I found myslelf over $15,000.00 dollaz in debt. I didn't have any $$$ at all. I had to pay rent, eat, and pay for gas and stuff. I remember somedays,,, all I had was $5 dollaz. Times were rough. After that,,, I don't think I will ever give any $$$ away again. Save that shit,,, it'll pay off.

You know what really pisses me off??? Those poeple who stand @ a busy intersection,,, right in the middle of the road or near a freeway on-ramp with a fuckin' sign!!! I swear,,, I see the same girl every single fuckin' day @ Boudary and Lougheed... AND SHE'S STARTIN' TO GET ON MY MUTHAFUCKIN' NERVES!!! I remember once after I had been up for 2 entire days,,, working... NO DRUGS,,, JUST WORKING. I lost it,,, and yelled @ her "GET A FUCKIN' JOB!!!" Damn,,, it pisses me off to see the same person begging day after day,,, after day. It's to the point where I'm gonna start throwin' pennnies @ her...

okay in regina there was this guy...really old native guy....like OLD. he was homeless and he'd make horse noises for a dollar. really good horse noises too. actually sounded like a horse.

anyways that's not why i'm posting....my mom looks after foster kids. one a time and she works to get them back with their familys and all that. now my parents have got some money. and they bring these kids into their home. my mom will take them shopping adn drop a couple hundred (which she usually doesn't get back from the gov.) on new clothes for the kid. social services then provides them with enough money 170 buck a month straight to the kid for personal items.
anyhow we had this one girl living with us...and every day after school my mom would have to go downtown and get her off the streets....where she spent the afternoon begging for change. then my mom would take her home to her new 200 thousand dollar house, where she stayed with my family and ate our food.
what bullshit. i'm always reluctant now.
