I don't think they're allowed to do that, since someone over 15 can buy stuff for someone under 15 and get it tax exempt. It's supposed to be on the honour system.

Since asking for your ID proved to be a porblem, I'll assume that you are indeed taxable.

So you don't believe that you should have to pay taxes? Is that just for clothes? or in general? Should other people be exempt from paying taxes? Or is that just a luxury for you? Do you like having paved streets? I sure do.

Yah but considering the fact I ain't buying the shit for me I am buying it for a 12 year old...I shouldn't be taxed for that kind of stuff in that case...

I would have demanded to speak to the manager.

The PST exemption is based on the honour system - it is 100% ILLEGAL for them to ask for ID, ask how old you are, or ask how old the person you're buying it for is.

Next time this happens, I suggest you remind the cashier AND their manager(s) of the correct practices. Then, call the better business bureau.

The problem is, I don't think anyone in retail actually knows this. I've been in sales for 1.5 years now and PST exemption has never been part of any training I've recieved. I actually learned it from a post you made on ED!

It's weird how some stores are like that. Yet, others really don't care. Every time I'm paying for something in Aritzia they say "That's non-taxable right?" They even said it to my mum when she was buying a shirt for herself.

If they ask I always say yes. If they think i'm young enough to ask then of course I"m going to milk it. I didn't have id other than a school card when I was actualy 15 so I would just say that I didn't have any.

Oh my god , seriously have you never done this?
It takes two seconds to say 'I'm buying this for my younger brother ( or fill in simbling of your choice )" .They can't refuse you, they'll just take down your address for tax purposes.

Just hush and pay your damn taxes.... nobody likes paying them but it is a necessary evil. If you want to continue to enjoy your standard of living in this country you have to support it. Too many people expect a free ride nowadays, its just sad.

its funny when ppl try on things themselves and you hear them say it'll look good with this or that in thier wardrobe and then theyre like, i'm buying this for my daughter

and i also hate it when ppl say school supplies to like a pack of $0.67 pencils.. like fuck, pay the 2 cents

I agree, pay the taxes if the item is actually for someone of PST-taxable age (15 or older).

But, if the item is for someone 14 years or younger, don't pay the tax. The government put these regulations into practice for a reason - the same goes for the $0.67 pencils. If they are for school, don't pay the tax.

I don't mind it when people who are obviously not buying it for someone underage ask for no tax, it's when they refuse to give the required information that annoys me. People are so paranoid of the government finding out, or that the cashier is going to HACK into thier house or do something illegal with the information attained. You know what, if you don't want to give me your private information, just pay the taxes.

The best reply I received was:
"I don't believe I have to give you this information."
"Well, unfortunately, if you want this to be tax excempt, I am going to need this for government purposes."
"No, the government doesn't agree with this."

Uh huh... like I really want your address, phone number, etc. I'm just some undercover spy from the planet QUIZOJDA sent to regulate the rules.

ARRRGGG!!
