Labelling ourselves

Okay, I'm so fucking sick of people placing labels on themselves all the time. Why are we coming up with so many ways to catagorize people? It's just stupid. Sure, some of them are funny (like Meterosexual), but there are other ones that I find to be just stupid.

Like why do people call themselves "Emo"....oh wow, you're so much more emotional than the rest of us. I wish i could be as tortured as you are. *note deadpan voice*

I don't understand the need for humans to do this to themselves. Can someone explain it to me?

because people generally get scared if they feel they don't fit in somewhere.

^^okay this makes sense to me, somewhat.

Although it seems kinda weird to go around making new labels just so you can say you fit into a group of people.

They want to feel part of a group, I guess. I wouldn't know. I've never labelled myself as anything. All too often I end up breaking the cliche by doing something that goes against what that stereotype is.

edit: It does have benefits, though. I've been able to weave my way through various social cliques, all the while maintaining my integrity.

Why do you think there's been categories, and label's on people ever since we can remember? Its one of those traits that unfortunately allot of people fall under....There just isnt enough born leaders out there. However its easy to become a follower....as is what most do.
Dont blame them though, they really havent figured things out yet. Once they do though, its a different story.

Fuck. We share a brain.

I hate when people do this.

When my sister went into grade 9 she started to make friends with people the 'punks' and so she started dressing up in like plaid pants and wearing spikes and putting safety pins in her ears. I know my sister and she's not like this at all. The safety pins gave her infections in her ears, and even then she refused to take them out.

I think you have to keep in mind that we all label ourselves in about a million ways every day that we probably don't even notice.
Most of us tend to think of ourselves as a student, a canadian, a (insert job here) a man/woman, ect.
Everyone has to make self-identificatoins in the process of deciding who they are. Some people just do it a lot more explicitly.

I know it's like a natural part of growing up to find out where you fit in and stuff. I guess I'm just pissed at the people that give labels to themselves so they can say 'Oh yeah, I'm different now, look at me, i'm so much better than the rest of humanity'

so true. but like i said in a post up there somewhere, i guess it's more of me being pissed at the people that only give themselves labels so they can say they're different from everyone. Why do they need a label for this? Just be a friggin' individual and people will get the message.

Have you ever opened a box of smarties and grouped them into colours?
They're still just smarties but you've now pointed out all the yellow ones, blue ones, etc.

We categorize, organize, and label EVERYTHING. Why not ourselves?

being part of a subculture and labelling yourself is just a way for people going through an idenity crisis to try and gain a grasp on who they are.

Yeah, a lot of what you guys are saying makes total sense. I mean, i knew that humans love to label things, whether it be Smarties or themselves.

I'm just finally fed up with being called a poser because I wear Etnie's and I'm not a 'Skater' or I have some piercings but i'm not a 'Punk'. This is the stuff that bothers me.

Emo=middle class punks.

Rebels that don't really have much to be rebellious about because they have such good lives.

At least, that's what I've gathered. Grunge was the punk of my era.

your problem isn't other people labelling you. your problem is you care too much about what other people think of you.

I understand where you're comming from.

The answer to those people is "go fuck yourself"
Unless they look like they might kick your ass, in which case the prudent thing is probably to ignore them.

^bah. psychologist bob. good point though.

It's hard not to care what other people think of you though. I wish i could say 'fuck the world and all you in it' but yeah, i have to live here so therefore what other people think makes a difference (however small) to me.

Or throw rocks from behind a fence or from inside a car. this works well.
