i really hate to say it, but I think things just might be getting worse and worse. this world we live in is a messed up place.

The real cowards here are the russian government who, like last time (the theatre hostage situation) were willing to sacrifice most of the hostages to gain a military victory.

They were not even gaining a military victory.. they made the sacrifice of all those kids simply to prove a point: "We will not negotiate or give in".

The rebels/terrorists/whatevers were left with 2 options. Die, or die and take as many of the hostages with you as possible. I understand why they chose the latter. But I still wish they hadn't =(

i agree with you, i think people should be educating themselves on what's going on in the world. that's what i try to do. there's a lot of people studying history and politics and world affairs in the place where i live so i talk to them all the time.

You haven't quite grasped the mentality of the hostage takers. It's more like this. They see Russia as being an invading, occupying force in their area of land (Russia sees Chechneya (Sp??) as a rogue province that belongs to them). Chechneya has a devoted and loyal and committed group of militants, but what in the world can they do against an army as massive as Russia's?

The most jarring leverage they have is to use heinous acts like the one they just recently employed. Obviously, a traditional "war" is not going to favour them. (It seems to me that terrorism often stems from a massive imbalance such as the one when comparing Chechneya to Russia... or the Western world to the Arab world).

The thought process of the hostage takers is likely along the lines of "It's going to take something really excessive in order to get this asshole Putin's attention once and for all. We took an entire movie theater full of people hostage, and that didn't give him pause; he sent in his troops and said 'to hell with the consequences, we will NOT NEGOTIATE'"

"Can he possibly be so reckless with the lives of his people's children?"

Well now they have their answer. And when the hostage takers realized that their methods would be no more succesful in this case, they had the option of just letting the kids go and risking Putin being branded a hero for his rescue of them... or of shooting them as they ran, and forcing Putin to run up against the kind of criticism that is now descending on him:

No one's going to endorse the tactics the hostage takers used to try and give themselves power agains the imposing force of Putin and his army. But we should at least try to understand their mentality; this "they're the enemy and they're evil" bullshit doesn't pass muster with me when the US gov't spews it, and it's no truer in this case.
