If you hadn't cancelled the service already, I would have text messaged the phone, offering a cash reward. That way you're pretty much guaranteed they get the whole message, and don't just hang up.

Similar thing happened to me. I left my old nokia on the bus. I kept calling it and initially noone picked up or answered, and I think the busdriver turned it off because my ex was obsessively calling my phone.... but eventually when I called again I believe the bussdriver picked up and organized a time for me to meetup with a busdriver who had my cellphone that would be on route to sfu... I was able to retrieve my cellphone. There are kind people out there.. but then again, my old phone was cheap and worthless.

Give them a dollar figure. 50 bucks, 100 bucks, depending on what the phone is worth. If I found a sweet phone and someone offered me a 100 bucks, I'd go for it.
