on top of prune juice, eating a general high fibre diet, (ie, whole wheat goods, fruits and vegetables) and lots of fluids ( approximately 2L) will help attract water and add bulk to the stools. stay away from diuretics. my friend went on this stupid low-carb diet and started getting constipated, something she had never had before. all she did was start eating 1 slice of whole wheat bread a day and the constipation was gone.

if you haven't had a bowel movement in about 2-3 days, try docusate sodium, a stool softener...

also, keep mobile! mobility will help promote muscle tone and facilitate peristalsis.

if it's really bad, you could try glycerin or dulcolax suppositories, or enemas..

and try not to strain. this can lead to hemorrhoids!

can you tell I've worked with a lot of chronically constipated individuals? :P
