If you can't understand what people are saying to you, doesn't that sort of answer the question?

so i say: if you can say the same thing but shorter and simpler, the better to ya
just wait untill post secondary..

I agree, everyone always talks about how all the other languauges (like spanish/italian/french) are sexy. But thats only because nobody puts the time of day into speaking proper english.

I dont mind when people use slang. However, when they get the fundamentals of english wrong... drives me nuts.

Speaking proper English is a bitch. Converting the thoughtflow of speech into proper grammatical form is very difficult, and always comes off as sounding too... overbearing, I suppose.

Hmmm...I consider myself well read and educated. I find that as long as the person can get the point across in what they are saying, I could care less about the spelling or grammar. Too many amazing ideas are thrown to the wayside because the people reading them are too caught up in how it looks, not what is actually being said.

Well put. It's all about communication. Sometimes an extensive vocabulary can actually prevent you from communicating well, and if you're not communicating, why are you talking?

It's not that I competely disagree but if there really are "Too many amazing ideas thrown to the wayside because the people reading them are too caught up in how it looks, not what is actually being said," than lets hear a few of them. My thought is that this is more than anything just a way of making people who lack a proper education feel good about themselves.

Myra, I couldn't have said it better myself!

Or perhaps I could have, if I had suspended my alacrity* and composed a response that paralleled the elegant articulation of yours, and employed the service of a thesaurus.

alacrity
a·lac·ri·ty
n.
1. Cheerful willingness; eagerness.
2. Speed or quickness; celerity.

heh, it's funny to see everyone throw down atleast 1 big word in their post to flaunt your superiorly vast vernaculars. Come on now, vocab is good, but when i try to gain a baring on how bright a person is, it definately isn't by how many big words they use. Instead, how they use their words. I can meet a person with a huge vocab and just a shitty personality and altho that person is educated, he/she is still a dumbass in my books.

Dude, if you wanna brush up on your vocab, just read and write more. It's all in practice (like rapping and poetry, it doesn't just come out of the blue). And you're not going to learn without taking the time to challenge yourself with books that are outside your skill level (if you feel you're ready). and fuck your teacher dude. If she's got a problem with teaching you, PM me. i'll explain to you whatever you need to know (if i know the word myself). And if you feel humility for not being able to pick out huge elaborate words when you want to, don't worry. There shouldn't be any humility in learning. The battle to learn is ALWAYS uphill my friend. And when you get a little momentum, picking up new words is easy peazy.

Ya, language is simply our way of getting across meaning. Greater vocabulary allows you to express yourself better, offers more clarity to your audience and it can pinpoint exactly what you mean in half the words. For instance:
connection points between entities or ideas = interlocutor

Plus, interlocutor just sounds cool.

do you have a pronountion key for "interlocutor" cause i think i'm saying it wrong. it seems like a extensive diction is pretty good to have. don't get me wrong, i'm not a complete dumbass i know some "big" words, it's just the 4-5 syllable words that trouble me. as for grammar i find it comes naturally to me, if it doesn't sound right it most likely not right
