Getting slapped by Shaw Internet

We would like to help identify the cause(s) that may be affecting your computer’s performance and most importantly your Internet experience. Often file-sharing programs Internet servers or one of many other misconfigured Internet applications can be the cause of high amounts of traffic. Not only will this affect the flow of traffic on the Internet but it also puts a major strain on computer resources.

It is important that you contact us immediately by telephone or email. If you are aware of the Internet application that may be causing this excessive amount of Internet usage please disable it and contact us. If you require assistance we would be more than happy to help.

Actually this happened to me last month.

I chose not to contact them and they suspended my internet until I contacted them and discussed the matter.

Pretty much just a pain in the ass.

actually, there are bandwidth limitations written into the contracts.

I guess I could use my download spike as an excuse as I'm pretty sure that is what cause this report to be generated.

it's usually the UPLOAD that they get bitchy about.
i doubt downloading stuff is why they are contacting you.

We never signed a contract for ours.
IMO, all the people who over-use their internet make up for families like mine that rarely use it because we're never home!

I work for a high speed internet provider and although we allow much higher bandwith usage then shaw - if some one is going over the limit exessively we first contact the customer in writing, by phone, and by email then if we don't get a response we do suspend the service.

I can't speak for shaw, but I would think they follow similar guidelines.

Yeah I remember calling shaw once about that and it was basically like a 15 minute 'talking to' where this woman just assumed I knew nothing about technology. It was really, really annoying.

Also, by signing up for the service you agree to all service terms and conditions - which include usage limits.

They should leave you alone yes. They don't want to take it away because you are a paying customer, but they also don't want you to cost them more than you are paying! Your activity might be monitored for a little while though.

If I could only figure out if it was uploads or downloads that they are bitching about.

I'm thinking d/l since the ftp was up for a while and only recently did I go nutz d/l everything I could.

Well I only have one cable outlet so that's it.

I tried to convince Shaw to put in a second seperate cable line in but the prices they installer gave me was insane.

Being able to merge 2 Extreme lines together would have been sweet.

hmm.. the price shouldn't of been too drastic, around $40 or so. I know that they would do it because of people who would need 2 seperate lines in 1 house,(ex. Person upstairs renting out downstairs, 2 diffrent lines).

Not knowing what your setup is right now, I could recommend a managed switch and take advantage of your extra IP's that you get with Shaw.

Shaw doesn't worry about major downloads, that goes for Telus as well. You also don't recieve unlimited bandwidth, as with Telus, they recently implemented a 30GB (I think for Extreme Package) a month for Shaw, and 7GB/m with Telus. Once you go over this limit, or come to this limit very quickly within a certain amount of time, they flag your line.
